As director of the NLN Center for Diversity and Global Initiatives, in collaboration with the 2,000 member ICN International Council of Nurses Education Network, Dr. Adams works to develop and sustain academic global partnerships. Launched in Durban, South Africa, the ICNEN works through its interactive website, posted bulletins, and ICNEN forums.

A W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Partnerships fellow, Dr. Adams explored strategies to build partnerships and bridge gaps in health services to redirect health professions education. Academic community partnerships were examined in Capetown and Johannesburg, South Africa; Temuco and Santiago, Chile; Sao Paolo, Brazil; and limited sites across the USA.

Dr. Adams’ current work as a member of the Consortium of Universities on Global Health Subcommittee on Global Health Competencies resulted in identifying competencies for the levels of global citizen and global practitioner. The goal is to move toward more standardized competencies among the many educational initiatives involved in global health.

Previous professional roles included nurse clinician, nurse educator, administrator, and various roles in the US Air Force and US Army Reserve. Dr. Adams served as dean at UNC Wilmington (UNCW) School of Nursing, interim dean at ETSU College of Nursing, and fulfilled other faculty roles at Winston Salem State University and North Carolina Central University.
