Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo Health Informatics and Innovation Collaborative Research Award

With a focus on health informatics and innovation in the use of data analysis and health information technology, the Edmund J.Y. Pajarillo grant opens a new avenue of research money to support the National League for Nursing and its members. Multiple real-world applications of research evidence focused on health informatics and innovation are urgently needed. Potential areas of focus include: 

• Exploring ways to increase integration of technology into academic learning environments
• Examining the implementation of novel roles envisioned for nurses and nurse educators as information technologists and specialists 
• Developing and testing of evidence-based best practices for point-of-care applications for nursing students to access health data and resources
• Testing innovative approaches to health informatics integration across nursing curricula.

Applications to the Pajarillo Fund for research grants will be considered in three broad categories:  

1. Research that conceptualizes and translates nursing informatics concepts and theories into new applications and systems to facilitate academic nursing education, practice, and science.
2. Research that establishes, expands, and influences future nurses’ roles to optimize and expand their marketability and professional demand.
3. Research that explores the creation of innovative nursing educational technology to foster and enhance high impact practice (HIP) learning.

Eligibility 

• The application process is open to the public, but preference will be given to NLN members. Applicants representing diverse populations and collaboration among disciplines are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Proposed studies must be clearly focused on health informatics and innovation research in nursing education and must relate to one or more of the  NLN Research Priorities in Nursing Education 2020-2023 (PDF).
• Student applicants must be enrolled in accredited graduate level programs and provide evidence that the proposed study has been approved by their dissertation committee or DNP and Master of Science in Nursing advisers, and IRB approval has been obtained, where applicable.

Proposal Guidelines 

1. A complete proposal includes a Blind Review File only (all identifying information of applicant removed). 
2. The proposal must be submitted electronically by a specified deadline. Incomplete proposals or proposals submitted after this time will not be accepted for review. 
3. Applications must adhere to requirements for format, content, length limitations, and necessary supporting materials as outlined in the  NLN Research Award Submission Guidelines (PDF).  

Components of the Blind Review File

The components of the Blind Review File must be submitted in one PDF file via the online submission system. 

1. Title page with applicant's name and affiliation removed. 
2. Proposal narrative (15 page limit, double spaced, includes abstract) with all identifying information of applicant removed. 
3. References cited. 
4. Appendices (if appropriate) with all identifying information of applicant removed. (Students must include confirmation of successful completion of proposal defense. Applicants may include documents on official letterhead with the name of the school visible; signatures can also be visible to demonstrate that the proposal received appropriate approval). 
5. A budget is not required for this award, but a timeline is.   

How to Submit

Proposals for the 2024 cycle will be accepted October 16, 2023, through February 1, 2024. - EXTENDED to 3/12

Review Process

The NLN Nursing Education Research Grants review process is used. All proposals are submitted for blind review by carefully selected experts in nursing education research. The submitted Blind Review File is the file that is reviewed by these experts. Recipients are selected through a peer review process using the following NLN Grant Proposal Review Rubric (PDF).  

Letters of notification are sent to grant applicants no later than July 1 of each cycle. 

Grant recipients are formally announced at the NLN Education Summit each fall. Awardees are encouraged to attend.
