As our population becomes increasingly diverse, it is crucial that nurses and future nurses develop the skills necessary to provide equitable and culturally aware care to patients from a variety of backgrounds. Despite academic accrediting bodies emphasizing the importance of health equity education, the content remains limited in many health professions programs, leading to missed opportunities in preparing healthcare professionals for culturally sensitive care. Many educators face challenges in finding effective strategies to teach these topics. This 60-minute webinar is designed to equip nurse educators and clinicians with practical approaches to promote health equity and combat bias. The session will help participants understand the impact of systemic oppression and structural racism on patient outcomes, and provide tools to develop educational strategies that foster equity-minded nursing practices. These strategies will help learners recognize bias, advocate for equitable care that will ultimately assist with dismantling inequities within our healthcare system. Practical strategies to address bias and discriminatory practices will also be introduced. Additionally, the session will focus on creating an inclusive learning environment that fosters a culture of cultural humility and belonging. By the end of the webinar, attendees will leave with actionable insights to reduce bias and advocate for social justice in healthcare.

Objectives:
  1. Describe the impact of systemic oppression and structural racism on patient outcomes.
  2. Discuss educational strategies to foster equity minded nurses that advocate for health equity.
  3. Demonstrate mitigation strategies to combat bias.
