The first in a series of three webinars that explore the intersection of nurse leadership and philanthropy. These webinars are especially informative for deans and directors, but are relevant to all nursing faculty who want to learn more about the role of philanthropy in nursing leadership.

This webinar will look at the long history connecting nursing with philanthropy from medieval support of women and men in nursing orders through the role played by foundations in the professionalization of nursing in the last century. Nursing and philanthropy have much in common; both are concerned with relationship building. It is important for nurses to serve on advisory and governance boards and to get others to serve on their advisory and governance boards, and most boards are dedicated to some aspect of resource development.

Speaker

Angela McBride, PhD, RN, FAAN

Angela Barron McBride is a Distinguished Professor and University Dean Emerita at Indiana University School of Nursing. Her 2011 book The Growth and Development of Nurse Leaders won the PROSE Award for outstanding professional and scholarly publishing in Nursing and Allied Health in the United States; an expanded second edition debuted in 2020. She was president of Sigma Theta Tau International during the building of their Center for Nursing Scholarship in Indianapolis, the first major fundraising campaign undertaken by a nursing organization (1987-89).

In 2000, she compiled a monograph entitled Nursing and Philanthropy. An Energizing Metaphor for the 21st Century which was published by Sigma’s press. Between 1995 and 2003, she served on the Board of Governors for The Center (now School) on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Among her accolades, Dr. McBride has been honored with various professional awards—for example, the National League for Nursing’s President’s Award—and seven honorary doctorates, elected to the National Academy of Medicine, and designated as a “Living Legend” by the American Academy of Nursing.
