Nurse Tapped to Serve in Post of Surgeon General

Washington, DC, April 24, 2017 - The National League for Nursing, the premier voice of nursing education, noted with pride the appointment today of career public health nurse, Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams, PhD, RN, FAAN, to the distinguished post of Surgeon General of the United States. The deputy to Dr. Vivek Murthy, a holdover from the Obama administration, Dr. Trent-Adams was tapped by President Trump to replace him and for now, is serving in an acting capacity.

“We applaud the selection of Dr. Trent-Adams, whose record of service speaks for itself. Her selfless dedication and commitment to improving public health over many years, reflects the extraordinary contributions that nurses make every day to advancing the health of our nation and global community,” said NLN President Anne R. Bavier, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean and professor at the University of Texas at Arlington College of Nursing and Health Innovation.

Dr. Trent-Adams was a nurse officer in the US Army, and since 1992, part of the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service, and then deputy associate administrator of the HIV/AIDS Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) before joining the Surgeon General’s office.

Added NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN: “On behalf of the NLN, I congratulate Dr. Trent-Adams and salute her appointment as the first person to serve as surgeon general who is not a physician. It is an honor to the nursing profession to have her talents and experience recognized in this high-profile role in federal government.”
