Facilitating the DNP Scholarly Project: From Idea to Dissemination

This two-day interactive workshop is designed for participants who are directly or indirectly involved with facilitating doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) project design, implementation, and evaluation. This immersion will include topics such as: critical conversations to guide students through the process, models of evidence-based practice leading to design and implementation of the project, types of scholarly projects, sustainment and dissemination. The session will generate a robust dialogue about the unique characteristics of DNP education, and differences between the DNP scholarly project and PhD dissertation. Small group interaction with facilitators will assist participants in advancing ways to more fully execute DNP scholarly projects from conceptualization to implementation in order to bring more rigor and standards to the process for all programs. Participants will leave this immersion with the tools to facilitate DNP project development in accordance with the DNP Essentials

Learning Objectives:
DNP faculty will be able to:

Differentiate between the DNP project and PhD dissertation
Explore ways to guide students through the process, keeping the project focused and narrow
Differentiate between quality improvement and research
Identify best practices in DNP project design, implementation, evaluation and dissemination

Speaker/s

Joyce Zurmehly, PhD, DNP, RN, NEA-BC

Having taught in every type of nursing education program from practical nursing through doctoral, Dr. Zurmehly understands the process of promoting excellence in education. Dr. Zurmehly is recognized for academic leadership in advancing nursing education through her work as a faculty scholar and nurse regulator. She has been influential in shaping undergraduate and graduate nursing education. Dr. Zurmehly's primary area of contribution in nursing education has been in collaborating with state and national experts to set enduring nursing education policy by promulgating administrative rules. Because of her expertise in the regulation of nursing programs, Dr. Zurmehly has been appointed to National committees, where she actively participated in developing policy in the regulation of nursing programs. Her research and scholarship have focused on innovations in evidence-based practice and education. As a director of the DNP program at The Ohio State University, Dr. Zurmehly understands processes relevant to advancing the DNP role.

Janice Agazio, PhD, CRNP, RN, FAANP, FAAN

Dr. Janice Agazio is currently Assistant Dean and Director of the PhD and DNP programs at The Catholic University of America in the School of Nursing where she serves as Ordinary Professor. She retired from active duty in the Army Nurse Corps after twenty-two years of service following her assignment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. She has specialized in pediatric nursing and is certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Her research includes issues related to military nursing care delivery and impact of military life upon families. Dr. Agazio is active in nursing professional organizations recently completing service as Regional Coordinator for Region 12 of Sigma Theta Tau International for the past 4 years, Chair of the Continuing Education Approval Committee for the Maryland Nurses Association since 1996, and serving as a CCNE site visitor and on the accreditation review committee. She is an active reviewer for nursing journals, and other grant and abstract review committees. Her recent publications have reflected previous research in ethical issues experienced by military nurses in wartime and deployment experiences for military families.
