Gateway to Debriefing with Good Judgment (with the Center for Medical Simulation)

This highly interactive course will leverage the best of online learning with in-person immersive learning. Utilizing deliberate practice, participants are given multiple opportunities to practice debriefing skills and receive feedback from expert simulation educators. Small groups of learners will work with co-facilitators to hone their ability to apply the foundational skills of debriefing with good judgment: improving future performance; holding learners to high standards while holding them in high esteem; treating learners as thinkers, not just doers; structuring a three-phase debriefing.

The Gateway Debriefing Skills Workshop begins with a kick-off synchronous webinar, continues with some asynchronous online modules, and concludes with the 1 day in-person workshop. Here are the dates for the NLN workshop:

Introductions

  • Introductions to each other in table groups and co-facilitators
  • Preview of the day: logistics, roles, course objectives, invitation to engage in the day
  • 3-2-1 exercise (@ start & end of day): participants write down:
    • 3 words that come to mind about debriefing
    • 2 questions about debriefing
    • 1 metaphor or simile for debriefing

The Importance of Perspective: Room with a View

 

9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

Model Debriefing

  1. View trigger video (Prebrief, and nursing students in sim) (4min)
  2. Mary will debrief co-facilitators, who will portray the actors in the video. Learner-driven “pause and discuss” using Poll Everywhere during debrief (45min)
  3. Activity: Based on the same video, (1)participants will write the top 3 elements that they will include in their prebriefings; (2)practice “Reactions/Facts” language, (3) P/A/I and (4)“Summary” language (may break this up) (40min)

Simulation

  1. Mary will prebrief group – all will take notes and provide feedback after simulation
  2. “Snake” simulation or Zoom in table groups
  3. 2 participants at each table will observe the group process and Debrief the activity
  4. Observers use an observation guide that will be constructed using elements 1, 3, & 5
  5. Debriefing the debriefing by co-facilitators, inviting observers to share their feedback

Simulated Debriefing, part #1

Debriefing the debriefing (45 min) by co-facilitators, inviting observers to share their feedback

Simulated Debriefing, part #2 (participant-driven, complex problems)

  1. Prep (20min)
    1. Review sim & prepare prebrief – refer back to “top 3 elements” from earlier exercise (2)
    2. Review objectives and prepare to debrief (3)
    3. Actors watch simulation and develop frames (2)
    4. Review DASH 1, 3, 5 & prepare to debrief-the-debrief (3 – only two actively)
  2. View trigger video (5min)
  3. Debrief including feedback on prebrief (15min)
  4. D-the-D (by participants with co-facilitator scaffolding as needed) 20min

  • Discussion at tables about difficult debriefing situations they’ve dealt with

Mary Fey, PhD, RN, CHSE

Mary Fey has been working in the field of clinical simulation since 2007 and has been responsible for developing clinical simulation programs, integrating simulation into nursing curricula, and designing and simulation labs. Currently, her work focuses on faculty development for simulation educators. She is Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and a Research Fellow at the Center for Medical Simulation at the Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr Fey is a co-author of the Standard of Best Practice for Simulation: Standard VI, The Debriefing Process. She has completed both qualitative and quantitative studies on debriefing and provides faculty development to interprofessional groups of simulation educators in academic and acute care settings. She received both basic and advanced debriefing training from the Center for Medical Simulation in Boston, MA.
She serves on the research committee of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation in Nursing. She also serves on the Certification Committee of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

Education: Dr Fey holds a PhD and a Post-Master’s Certificate in Teaching from the University of Maryland.

TAXI 
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA): Taxis are available outside the baggage claim area. Fare is approximately $20 one-way (15 minute ride). 
Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD): Taxis are available on the lower level outside baggage claim. Fare is approximately $70 one-way (40 minute ride). 
Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI): Taxis are available on the lower level outside baggage claim. Fare is approximately $100 one-way (1 hour ride).

METRO/TRAIN 
The Washington, DC Metrorail system has an elevated Metrorail station connected to the concourse level of terminals B and C at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA). The River Inn is conveniently located 2 blocks from the Washington DC Metrorail, so if you fly into Reagan National Airport, take the Blue Line towards Largo Town Center and get off at the Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro Station. Getting to the Metrorail station from the Terminals
Terminal A: Exit the terminal to the streetside curb, and board any “Airport Shuttle” bus. At the stops for Terminal B/C or Parking Garages B and C you may access an enclosed bridge which connects to the Metrorail station.

Terminal B and C: Use either of two enclosed pedestrian bridges on the concourse level which connect directly to the station.

Walking Directions from Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro Station to Hotel
Exit the Foggy Bottom station through the I Street entrance & walk approximately 2 blocks West on I Street NW. Then turn right on 25th Street NW. Walk approximately 1.5 blocks north on 25th Street NW, & when you hit 924 25th Street NW, you're at The River Inn.
