Pre-Conference Workshop on Board Development Nurses on Boards: Opening Doors to Leadership

To complement the Paradigms in Nursing Leadership Conference  on November 10, 2015, the Independence Blue Cross Foundation (IBCF), the National League for Nursing (NLN) and the Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) are sponsoring a free workshop focused on board development.

Nurses on Boards: Opening Doors to Leadership; an initiative by the Nurses on Boards Coalition.

Description

The Nurses on Boards Coalition’s goal is to improve the health of communities and the nation through the service of nurses on boards and other bodies. All boards benefit from the unique perspective of nurses to achieve the goals of improved health and efficient and effective health care systems at the local, state and national levels. The strategy is to have 10,000 nurses on boards by the year 2020. This effort is a direct response to the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM)  report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011), which recommended nurses play more pivotal decision-making roles on boards and commissions to improve the health of all Americans. Therefore, participants at this pre-conference workshop will be provided with concrete examples and action steps to pursue board involvement and be inspired to lead in non-traditional ways.

Objectives

  • Identify a historical perspective of nurses on boards using a health system as a model.
  • Explore the importance of nurses serving on boards.
  • Discuss personal experiences of nurses appointed to boards.
  • Identify resources to prepare nurses for appointment to boards
