2006 NLN Education Summit Sells Out
Reflects Increasing Importance of Nursing Education in Light of Continuing Nursing and Nurse Faculty Shortage

New York, NY.... The sold-out National League for Nursing annual conference and exhibition boasts its largest attendance of nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education ever. Participants at Transformation Begins with You number nearly 1600 and represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the US Territories.
Hands-on workshops, symposia, paper presentations, and poster exhibitions explore new pedagogies, flexible curriculum designs, clinical teaching models, best practices in teaching and learning, quality improvement processes, and the development of the science of nursing education. In addition, presentations will challenge conference attendees to think in innovative ways about teacher-student relationships, student recruitment and retention, creating environments that support faculty, integrating technology into educational processes, and evidence-based teaching practices.
Attorney Lynn Shapiro Snyder, named by Modern Healthcare magazine one of the "Top 25 Women in Healthcare," will deliver the keynote address at the opening session (Wednesday, September 27, 4 pm); the plenary sessions panel of leaders in nursing education will facilitate a discussion of the significant role individual faculty have in achieving excellence through transformation (Thursday, September 28, 8:30 am); the annual business meeting (Saturday, September 30, 8:30 am) features the valedictory report of retiring NLN CEO, Dr. Ruth Corcoran; the unveiling of the schools of nursing that have been named 2006-2009 Centers of Excellence, the announcement of the NLNs research grants, and the launch of the NLNs Ambassador Program.
The NLNs annual awards ceremony on Saturday evening, September 30 will pay tribute to two visionary leaders in nursing education, now retiring. Dr. Diane Billings will receive the NLN Award for Outstanding Leadership in Nursing Education. A visionary leader, she has served as mentor, scholar, master teacher, and advocate for distance education technology. Well-known for mentoring fellow faculty members, throughout her distinguished 35-year career at Indiana University and beyond, Dr. Billings has inspired confidence and a sense of empowerment in her colleagues.
Dr. Ruth Corcoran has crowned a distinguished career with her stewardship of the NLN. Appointed chief executive officer in January 1998, Dr. Corcorans dedication, courage, and business acumen allowed her to become the driving force behind the wonderful success the NLN is today, an organization of strength and influence. Dr. Corcoran will receive the award for Outstanding Leadership to the National League for Nursing.
