2010 NLN Education Summit Will Showcase Key Role of Nursing Education in America's Changing Health Care Environment

New York, NY — May 10, 2010 — Early bird registration is now available for the 2010 Annual Education Summit, the NLNs much anticipated professional gathering for nurse educators and leaders in nursing education coast-to-coast.

Explained NLN president Cathleen Shultz, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN, "This years Summit theme, Shaping History, Reforming Health Care: The Power of Nursing Education, will examine the future of higher education and nursings role in advancing health care reform." Nationally renowned educators, distinguished for their leadership, advocacy, and scholarship will explore how those in advanced practice educator roles, responsible for preparing a nursing workforce to care for diverse populations, can contribute to a more equitable system of health care distribution and boost health outcomes in a re-imagined world of greater access to quality care. Also covered in workshops, seminars, and presentations by leading nurse educators will be the latest developments in research, technology, and curriculum.

"The 2010 Education Summit promises to be another extraordinary opportunity for colleagues to network and share ideas, experiences, insights, and knowledge to inspire each other in classrooms and clinical settings," said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. "Plus, we are meeting in the Entertainment Capital of the World! See Donny & Marie at the Flamingo on Thursday evening, and/or Cirque du Soleils O on Friday evening. Both events benefit the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education."

Emceed by Drs. Shultz and Malone, Wednesdays Opening Session will feature a panel of thought leaders who have been in the forefront of national efforts to shape nursing education. Moderated by Angela McBride, PhD, RN, FAAN, this keynote presentation will address "Looking Back to Move Forward," sharing a vision of the future of nursing education. The Summit opener also features the bestowal of the prestigious NLN Presidents Award on Carrie Lenberg, EdD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, in recognition of her extraordinary legacy of nursing education leadership.

Thursdays Plenary Session panel, led by Dr. Louise Fitzpatrick, will discuss their innovative programs created in response to changes in health care. The schedule then continues with the first of three days of concurrent sessions highlighting teaching, technology and simulation, and leadership.

Friday will begin with Dr. Malones CEO Summit Address, followed by the National Faculty Meeting. Chaired by NLN president-elect Dr. Judith Halstead, Dr. Patricia Benner will discuss her groundbreaking report, Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation, recently published by the Carnegie Foundation. The general sessions of the day finish with the Centers of Excellence/Research Awards and Scholarship Presentations and are followed by an afternoon of special and concurrent sessions.

The Summit will conclude on Saturday with a full day of activities, including: the Laerdal-sponsored Debra Spunt Lecture, "Research in Simulation: Why, Who, How, Now?" to be delivered by Suzan Kardong-Edgren, PhD, RN, an assistant professor at Washington State University College of Nursing; more concurrent sessions; and the Town Meeting and Annual Business Meeting. The Presidents Reception, followed by the Academy of Nursing Education Fellows Induction and Awards Banquet will provide a perfect ending to an invigorating conference.
