NLN CEO Invited to Join Federal Panel on Minority Health

Dr. Beverly Malone Will Participate in Discussion Considering
"Developing and Diversifying the Health Care Pipeline in the US"

New York, NY — June 17, 2010 — Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, the CEO of the National League for Nursing, will gather with other thought leaders in health care at the Doubletree Hotel in Washington, DC on Tuesday, July 6 from 2:15-3:45 pm for a panel discussion devoted to "Developing and Diversifying the Health Care Pipeline in the US."

The panel will take place as part of a two-day meeting of the Advisory Committee on Minority Health (ACMH), a federal committee established to advise the US secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) on matters of importance to the health of racial and ethnic minority populations. The group is positioned to influence the evolving national conversation on reforming health care policy and practice. Dr. Malone was invited in May to join the panel by Dr. Garth Graham, deputy assistant secretary on minority health, and ACMH chair, Dr. Rebens Pamies.

The focus of this years committee deliberations is increasing diversity in the health care workforce in the US, following which the committee will issue its report with recommendations to the secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sibelius.

Earlier in her career, Dr. Malone was deputy assistant secretary of health and human services in the Clinton administration, serving under HHS secretary Donna Shalala. She has made increasing diversity in the nursing and nurse educator workforce a signature of her tenure at the NLN, since she joined the organization as CEO in February 2007.

"I am looking forward to sharing the NLNs perspective on increasing diversity in the health care workforce, as the NLNs and others research confirm that minimizing cultural, economic, and social disparities between health care providers and patients leads to improved health outcomes," Dr. Malone stated. "The ACMH is in the forefront of this important advocacy work, and it is my privilege to participate."
