New President for National League for Nursing as Award-Winning Indiana Nurse Educator Takes Helm of NLN Board of Governors

President-Elect and Three New Governors Also Installed During NLN 2011 Education Summit

New York, NY — October 6, 2011 — Judith A. Halstead, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, professor and executive associate dean for academic affairs at Indiana University School of Nursing in Indianapolis, was installed as president of the National League for Nursing at the annual NLN Business Meeting on Saturday, September 24, held during the NLNs 2011 Education Summit in Orlando, Florida. The president-elect for the past two years, Dr. Halstead takes over the office from Cathleen M. Shultz, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN, who stepped down at the end of her two-year term.

NLN members have chosen Marsha Howell Adams, DSN, RN, CNE, ANEF, as president-elect; she will become president in 2013, when Dr. Halsteads term expires. Michael A. Newsome, CRA was re-elected treasurer. In addition to Dr. Adams, there are three individuals newly elected to the NLN Board of Governors: Marilyn Frenn, PhD, RN, CNE; June Larson, MS, RN, ANEF; and George D. Velianoff, PhD, RN, FACHE, ANEF.

Judith A. Halstead, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, brings 32 years of experience in undergraduate and graduate nursing education and expertise in online education, nurse educator competencies, and evidence-based teaching in nursing education to her post. She is co-editor of the widely referenced book on nursing education, Teaching in Nursing: A Guide for Faculty. Dr. Halstead served as the chair of the National League for Nursings Task Group on Nurse Educator Competencies which resulted in the development of evidence-based nurse educator core competencies, and she is editor of the book representing its work, Nurse Educator Competencies: Creating an Evidence-Based Practice for Nurse Educators. Dr. Halstead was the 2005 recipient of the MNRS Curriculum and Education Research Section Advancement of Science Award for her leadership in advancing the science of nursing education. She is past chair of the NLNs Nursing Education Research Advisory Council (NERAC). A fellow of the NLN Academy of Nursing Education since 2007, on October 15, 2011, Dr. Halstead will be inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in recognition of her ongoing accomplishments in nursing and nursing education.

Newly Elected to the NLN Board of Governors

As assistant dean of undergraduate programs at the Capstone College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, NLN president-elect Marsha Howell Adams, DSN, RN, CNE, ANEF, provides leadership and day-to-day management of all activities related to the program. In addition, Dr. Adams teaches both undergraduates and graduates in classroom, on-line, and clinical settings. With a post-masters certificate in rural case management, she has been a rural nursing consultant for more than 25 years, publishing clinical research that has focused attention on rural women and children and on nursing education. Long active in the NLN, Dr. Adams has served on the NLN Board of Governors, as chair of the NLN Excellence in Nursing Education Task Group, on the NLN Academic Nurse Educator Certification Commission, and on the editorial board of the NLNs research journal, Nursing Education Perspectives. She received the Nursing Lamplighter Award from the Alabama League for Nursing, an NLN-affiliated constituent league. Other professional affiliations include: the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Sigma Theta Tau International; Alabama State Nurses Association; International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning; Alabama Rural Health Association; Phi Kappa Phi; and the Case Management Society of America.

A national leader in nursing education, June Larson, MS, RN, ANEF, was named associate dean of the University of South Dakotas School of Health Sciences, having been steadily promoted since she first joined USD as an instructor in 1980. In 2000, she became chair of the Department of Nursing. In 2008, Ms. Larson was inducted into the NLNs Academy of Nursing Education, highlighting her contributions to the field. And in 2010, she chaired the NLN Competency Task Group which produced a monograph on outcomes for graduates of nursing programs across the academic spectrum. Other honors include the Pioneer in Nursing Award from the South Dakota Nurses Association, awarded in September 2008. A past president of the South Dakota Board of Nursing, Ms. Larson is currently the boards vice president.

Associate professor at Marquette University College of Nursing in Milwaukee, WI, Marilyn Frenn, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, teaches a course on nursing education research policy and leadership in the universitys doctoral program. Chair of the NLN Nursing Education Research Advisory Council (NERAC), she was honored to co-chair the Nursing Education Research Think Tank, which met this summer to reset the agenda and spending priorities for nursing education research in the years ahead. The meeting was an invitation-only gathering of thought leaders in nursing education and nursing education research. Dr. Frenn is also a past president of the Wisconsin League for Nursing, an NLN-affiliated constituent league.

George D. Velianoff, PhD, RN, FACHE, ANEF, joined the management team as health care executive of the Cerner Corp., an international health care informatics company specializing in health care systems solutions, in March 2008. Dr. Velianoff has more than 30 years of progressive senior leadership and clinical experience in acute care, ambulatory, association, and academic settings. Prior to his work at Cerner, Dr. Velianoff was a chief nurse executive in both community and academic medical centers, responsible for all aspects of patient services. He has taught graduate classes at Case Western Reserve University, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, and Marshall University. He was also instrumental in creating a grant-funded nursing research consortium consisting of five acute care facilities and three colleges of nursing.
