NLN Announces 2012 Academy of Nursing Education Fellows
Induction Set for September 21 at NLN Education Summit in Anaheim, CA

New York, NY — June 7, 2012 — Thirty-two distinguished nurse educators will join the National League for Nursing's Academy of Nursing Education when they are inducted as fellows at the 2012 NLN Education Summit this fall in Anaheim, California. This sixth class of fellows, selected through a competitive application process, is the largest since the academy was established in 2007. In addition, for the first time in 2012, the academy will induct five honorary fellows, a new category created by the NLN Board of Governors last fall to recognize retired nurse educators or those in affiliated professions or public service who have made significant contributions to advancing excellence in nursing education. The 2012 fellows and honorary fellows together bring the academy's total to 154 leaders in nursing education from nursing programs across the higher education spectrum and from other organizations committed to health care.
With an applicant pool much larger than in years past the Academy of Nursing Education Review Panel had a great deal to review before making its recommendation to the NLN Board of Governors, the oversight body for the academy. Panelists take into account applicants' contributions to innovative teaching and/or learning strategies; nursing education research; faculty development activities; academic leadership; promotion of public policy that advances nursing education; and/or collaborative educational, practice, or community partnerships.
"I believe it is noteworthy that the NLN has set a gold standard for excellence in nursing education such that more and more of today's nurse educators aspire to fellowship in the academy," said Judith A. Halstead, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, the president of the NLN. Remarking on the new category of honorary fellow at the time it was established, Dr. Halstead added: "Honorary fellows will bring an added dimension to the diversity of the academy as the NLN seeks to spotlight individuals from outside the profession and other nursing leaders from around the country and around the world who may not be eligible for full fellowship."

The NLN established the Academy of Nursing Education to foster excellence in nursing education by recognizing and capitalizing on the wisdom of outstanding nurse educators. Fellows support the mission and core values of the NLN, assist in the work required to prepare graduates from all types of nursing programs, and serve as resources for new educators and those in clinical practice who hope to someday enter the ranks of nurse faculty.
