New York, NY — October 9, 2012 — Shifts and changes in the nations health care systems continue to affect ways nursing graduates practice and patients access services. But have nursing curricula kept pace? Learning how to be a "positive disrupter" in order to lead and sustain successful curriculum innovations is the focus of the NLN Leadership Conference, Transforming Leadership into Action: Disrupting Your Curriculum. Join the National League for Nursing, January 10 - 12 at the Embassy Suites Phoenix-North to hear keynoter Jason Hwang, MD, MBA* and other noted experts present collaborative leadership strategies to transform curriculum models.

Participants will be led to challenge key assumptions that may undo even the best insights about curricular change, discover ways to motivate and influence others to lead reform agendas, and identify emerging curriculum models that are informed by changes in practice.

In his Friday morning keynote address, Dr. Hwang will engage nurse educators in exploring the principles of disruptive innovation and their application to nursing education in the context of health care reform. He will follow up his formal talk with a hands-on group activity, "Job to be Done Challenge," designed to answer two key questions: What products do we want to turn out through undergraduate and graduate nursing programs to meet current workforce needs; and how will this new understanding translate into program design?

NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, opens the conference Thursday evening with an exhilarating conversation about individual leadership journeys and opportunities created through transitions to new faculty roles and by anticipating novel workforce demands. She and NLN president Judith A. Halstead, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, conclude the conference mid-day Saturday, asking, "How Will You Be a Disruptive Leader Now?" — a free exchange of ideas to bring the theme full circle.

In the afternoons Concurrent Sessions, participants will immerse in one of four curriculum tracks — online, simulation-focused, integrated, or concept-based — to consider the pros and cons of new curricular approaches and what these portend for changing faculty roles and student outcomes.

Other expert presenters on the agenda are Pamela Jeffries, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF; Paula Gurbud-Howe, EdD, RN, FAAN; and Mary Ellen Smith Glasgow, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC.

*Keynote Speaker Jason Hwang, MD, MBA
Jason Hwang, MD, MBA, is co-founder and executive director of Healthcare at Innosight Institute, a non-profit social innovation think tank based in Watertown, Massachusetts. He is co-author of The Innovators Prescription: A Disruptive Solution for Healthcare, a book on disruptive innovation in health care, with Clayton Christensen, professor at the Harvard Business School, and Jerome Grossman, former director of the Harvard/Kennedy School Health Care Delivery Policy Program.

Dr. Hwang is an internal medicine physician and has received multiple recognitions for his clinical work. Previously, he was a Harvard Business School fellow at Innosight, Clayton Christensens innovation consulting firm, and he has also worked with the Health Horizons Program at the Institute for the Future, a forecasting think tank based in Palo Alto, California. Dr. Hwang taught as chief resident and clinical instructor at the University of California, Irvine until 2004 and has also served as a clinician with the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Medical Group and the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, California.

Dr. Hwang received his BS and MD from the University of Michigan, did his residency training at the University of California, Irvine, and earned his MBA from Harvard Business School.
