NLN Awarded Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Grant

Washington, DC, November 13, 2015 – Thanks to a generous grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the NLN will distribute the Moore Foundation’s Lessons in Leadership: The Betty Irene Moore Speaker Series, to a broad audience that includes participants in the NLN Leadership Institute and other NLN programs and conferences.

Lessons in Leadership is a program of the Moore Foundation’s Betty Irene Moore Nursing Initiative, launched in 2003. It features video presentations by a dozen nationally recognized leaders in nursing and health care. These dynamic individuals describe their vision of leadership: what makes an effective leader and what leadership qualities are most valuable for nurses to develop as they seek to deliver outstanding patient care in hospitals and other acute care settings. They also offer advice to RNs and other health care professionals, practical and conceptual, about how best to prepare to step into leadership roles.

“The Nursing Initiative’s leadership strategy is congruent with the NLN’s strong commitment to leadership development,” noted NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. “We will be strongly encouraging NLN members—more than 40,000 strong—who teach in or lead nursing education programs that span the spectrum of higher education to visit the Moore Foundation website to view Lessons in Leadership.”

At the League’s 2015 Education Summit in September in Las Vegas, nurse faculty, nursing students, deans and administrators of nursing programs, and executives in allied health care organization had the chance to learn about the series.

Other opportunities to raise awareness of Lessons in Leadership through NLN programming include the Leadership Institute, housed in the NLN Center for Transformational Leadership. The institute offers three year-long tracks in leadership development to a cohort selected each year through competitive application: LEAD, for faculty fast-tracked by their institutions for leadership positions; Leadership Development Program for Simulation Educators; and Executive Leadership in Nursing Education and Practice, for deans, directors, and other senior administrators in health care and nursing education.
