Washington, DC, October 18, 2016 - Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, CEO of the National League for Nursing said she is “pleased and proud” to accept the Florence Nightingale Award and the honor of being inducted into the Home Care & Hospice Hall of Fame, as one of six high-profile individuals selected in 2016 by the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC). Val J. Halamandaris, NAHC’s president, made the announcement of this year’s honorees on May 12, Miss Nightingale’s birthday, which falls annually during National Nurses week. Miss Nightingale herself is also being given the award created in her name and inducted into the Hall of Fame, posthumously.

Dr. Malone will formally accept the award and participate in the induction ceremony set for Monday, October 24 at the 34th Annual Meeting & Exposition of the NAHC in Orlando, Florida.

Said NLN president Anne R. Bavier, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and dean of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at the University of Texas at Arlington: “How society treats the most vulnerable among us is a measure of its moral foundation. Bev’s compass couldn’t be straighter, as she role models excellence in nursing education that instills the values of the dignity and worth of every individual and strives to alleviate suffering.”

Dr. Malone has made one of her signature commitments to increasing excellence and diversity of a nursing workforce prepared to provide outstanding, culturally-sensitive patient care in tune with today’s global health care environment. Through the NLN’s core values of caring, integrity, diversity, and excellence, Dr. Malone has spotlighted the League’s dedication to promoting the highest standards of instruction in compassionate care for all vulnerable populations. She was instrumental in the co-creation, with corporate and foundation partners, of the NLN Center for Excellence in the Care of Vulnerable Populations, reflected in the NLN’s initial signature ACE.S program (Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors), unique among geriatric nursing education.

“It is clear that the NLN and NAHC share key values and a mission to treat the aged, infirm, and home-bound, coping with chronic and debilitating conditions often in the final stages of life, with utmost dignity and compassion. I am deeply touched and honored by this recognition, and accept most graciously, on behalf of my colleagues in the NLN and the wider community of nurses and nurse educators who partner with home health and hospice professionals every day in their sacred work,” Dr. Malone said.

In addition to Dr. Malone and Miss Nightingale, the 2016 honorees are:
  • Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge
  • Denise Schrader, Chair, NAHC’s Board of Directors
  • Walter Borginis, CEO, Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Philadelphia
  • Anthony Fauci, MD, Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
“These honorees represent the very best among us,” said NAHC’s Halamandaris. “They have devoted their lives to serving others, just like Mother Teresa, the first inductee into the Hall of Fame. She devoted her life to caring for those she described as ‘the least among us,’ the aged, infirm, dying, and disabled. We are pleased to have the opportunity to honor these people who honor us through their selfless service.” NAHC established its Hall of Fame in 1982.
