NLN to Present 2017 President’s Awards at San Diego Summit

| National League for Nursing to Present Prestigious President’s Award to Two Pioneering Professionals at | ||
| Washington, DC, June 30, 2017 - The NLN President’s Award, the League’s most prestigious honor, recognizes leaders who have been instrumental in advancing health care, as demonstrated by their years of service and distinctive accomplishments in nursing, nursing education, and related health care institutions and corporations. This year’s recipients, Patricia E. Thompson, EdD, RN, FAAN, and Clive Patrickson, PhD, are no exceptions, said NLN president Anne R. Bavier, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and dean of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at the University of Texas at Arlington.
On Thursday evening, Dr. Bavier will present the award to Dr. Thompson, just prior to the Keynote Address by Dr. David Daniel to the capacity crowd of nurse educators. “There is no more deserving recipient of the NLN President’s Award,” said Dr. Bavier of her selection. “Pat has exemplified the highest levels of scholarship, teaching, and clinical practice in the profession of nursing throughout her long and distinguished career. A role model to so many, I am proud to know her and to honor her, on behalf of the NLN.” Dr. Thompson, a pediatric nurse, university administrator, and past president of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), is stepping down as CEO after leading the organization through a period of unprecedented global expansion. Under her watch, the 135,000-strong professional organization has moved boldly to develop nurse leaders throughout the world. “It is an exciting time to be a member of the honor society, when our leadership, scholarship, and knowledge offerings are the pinnacle of professional development for the nurses and global communities they serve,” remarked Dr. Thompson, urging members: “Volunteer, get involved, and you will receive so much more back, both professionally and personally, than you give.” Dr. Patrickson’s NLN President’s Award will be presented following the Debra L. Spunt Memorial Lecture on Saturday morning. Dr. Bavier applauded his visionary leadership of Laerdal Medical, saying: “Clive has helped propel innovative partnerships among academia, health care, and industry to effect sustainable improvement in nursing and health care education. Consequently positive health outcomes happen where it really counts – at the bedside in hospitals, and increasingly, in health clinics and in-home care.” Laerdal and the NLN, Dr. Bavier went on to note, have long had a productive collaboration in bringing simulation to nursing education worldwide. In an interview with Medical Training Magazine earlier this year, Dr. Patrickson was asked what he saw as the role of industry in patient safety. Thompson, EdD, RN, FAAN Dr. Thompson became Sigma Theta Tau International’s chief executive officer from her position as associate dean for academic programs at the College of Nursing, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Her clinical career began as a pediatric staff nurse at Schumpert Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. In the early 1970s, she obtained her BSN from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA and an MSN in pediatrics from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. In the early 1980s, she returned to the classroom and earned her EdD in higher education administration and a minor in business management from the University of North Texas in Denton. An STTI member for more than 30 years, Dr. Thompson, has served in many volunteer leadership roles, including that of president from 1999 to 2001. She is passionate about the honor society and believes the organization accomplishes the goals it sets out to achieve. “I’ve belonged to a lot of different organizations inside and outside of nursing. Many spend a lot of time talking and planning, but they rarely get to the implementation phase,” Dr. Thompson asserted. “The honor society plans strategically and then moves its members into action.” Clive Patrickson, PhD, MBA, LLM Clive Patrickson currently holds the position of director of strategic alliances and corporate support and service in Laerdal Medical, a position he has held since stepping down as the chief executive officer. Laerdal is a privately held Norwegian company, with operations in 24 countries. Dr. Patrickson joined Laerdal in 1989 in Australia, and his positions have since included the president of American operations (twice) and global vice president of sales, marketing and services, as well as CEO. Dr. Patrickson has a PhD in business with a focus on the management of strategic relationships, a Juris Doctor, MBA and LLM. He started his academic career with a degree in education from Keele University in the UK. He has retained his legal practice certificate in Victoria and is a member of the Victorian Bar.
