The NLN Awards To Be Presented at 2017 Education Summit

| National League for Nursing Announces Named NLN Awards 2017 Education Summit in San Diego, CA | ||
| Washington, DC, August 21, 2017 - The NLN Awards, named for three luminaries in nursing education, are to be presented at the NLN's 2017 Education Summit in San Diego, California, part of a special Honors Convocation that will precede the President's Gala Reception on Saturday, September 16. Following in the footsteps of past award winners, Drs. Jean Giddens, Selena Hunt McKinney, and Phyllis Sharps have been selected by the NLN Awards Committee from a competitive field of nominees. (Bio-sketches are below.) The NLN Board of Governors makes the ultimate determinations, based on the committee's recommendations. NLN president Anne R. Bavier, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor and dean of the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at the University of Texas at Arlington, noted that this year the NLN continues a tradition of making the awards in memory of three outstanding nurses whose legacies help define excellence in nursing education: Mary Adelaide Nutting, Isabel Hampton Robb, and Lillian Wald. "These awards reflect the highest levels of achievement embodied by the NLN's core values of caring, integrity, diversity, and excellence, whether in the classroom, a clinical setting, or through public advocacy." Added NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN: "We are proud to acknowledge today's leaders in nursing education who continue the spirit and accomplishments of these awards' namesakes." The annual Summit draws a capacity crowd of nurse faculty, deans, and administrators, and professionals from allied health organizations. In addition to the NLN Awards presentation, the induction of new fellows into the NLN's Academy of Nursing Education and NLN Centers of Excellence recognition will be part of the evening's festivities. Bio-Sketches Jean Foret Giddens, PhD, RN, FAAN Dean and Professor, Doris B. Yingling Endowed Chair Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Nursing Jean Giddens is dean and professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing in Richmond, a position she has held since July 2013. Dr. Giddens previously held various leadership positions at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing. Dr. Giddens has had significant national influence on nursing education through her involvement with academic progression in nursing, curriculum expertise, as a consultant, and as an author of multiple journal articles, nursing textbooks, and electronic media. An alumna of the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow program, 2011 cohort. Dr. Giddens received a BSN degree from the University of Kansas, an MSN degree from University of Texas, El Paso, and a PhD from Colorado State University. She is being inducted into the Class of 2017 of the NLN Academy of Nursing Education. IN CLINICAL PRACTICE Selina (Tena) Hunt McKinney, PhD, APRN, PMHNP-BC Clinical Associate Professor; Director, Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program University of South Carolina College of Nursing Tena McKinney is an associate professor and director of the Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. She practices as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and teaches mental health nursing in baccalaureate and graduate programs. Dr. McKinney earned a PhD from the University of South Carolina, Arnold School of Public Health and completed a two-year, research fellowship at Duke University School of Nursing. Her scholarship focuses on increasing health system capacity for mental health care for underserved populations. To achieve this, she builds innovative, interprofessional education and practice models. She is also developing the Center for Connected Health at the College of Nursing through grant funding from the Duke Endowment, Fullerton Foundation and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina Foundation. Currently the president-elect of the South Carolina Nurses Association, Dr. McKinney has been recognized for her many achievements. Phyllis Sharps, PhD, RN, FAAN Elsie M. Lawler Endowed Chair, Professor of Nursing and Associate Dean for Community Programs Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing Phyllis Sharps is internationally known for her research, leadership of interdisciplinary research teams, and her advocacy for violence against pregnant and parenting women. Dr. Sharps is the director of the Center for Community Scholarship and Innovations which includes two community health nurse-led centers Birth Companions, Community Outreach, and the health and wellness programs for the Henderson Hopkins School and the Weinberg Early Childhood Center in East Baltimore. Dr. Sharps has been the principal investigator for two NIH-funded grants, totaling more than $8 million. "Domestic Violence Enhanced Home Visitation - DOVE" is a public health nurse intervention to reduce violence against pregnant women and HRSA-funded advanced nursing education training grant to prepare nurse practitioners and doctor of nurse practice practitioners to care for underserved populations. A second grant, "Nurse Home Visitation Enhanced with Health," is investigating the effectiveness of digital technology for screening and intervention for intimate partner violence against pregnant and parenting women. A fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, a member of the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame (2013), and of the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society (2013), Dr. Sharps has also received the University of Maryland School of Nursing Visionary Pioneers Award (2015) and the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing President's Award (2016), in recognition of her long-term commitment to leading community-based interdisciplinary research teams.
