National League for Nursing Leadership Institute Focus on Individualized Executive Coaching | |||||||||
Washington, DC, April 5, 2018 - The NLN Leadership Institute has announced the selection, through competitive application, of this year's three cohorts for its yearlong professional development program. A total of fifty-six nurse educators have been chosen to participate on one of three tracks:
Each program requires a significant time commitment for an entire calendar year. Participants identify personal and professional goals; learn about what makes an effective leader; and strategize how to re-tool skill sets and experiences to achieve individual benchmarks. To that end, everyone receives intensive one-on-one executive coaching. In addition, they attend online and live group coaching sessions, workshops, and webinars, where they study leadership theory and development that includes case study review. NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, noted the ongoing support from Johnson & Johnson's Campaign for Nursing's Future and Galen College of Nursing: "We are grateful to our corporate and academic partners who have made possible the expansion of the content and capacity of the NLN Leadership Institute. Thanks to their generosity, greater numbers of nurse educators have the opportunity to gain valuable guidance and mentorship from world-class faculty." G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, NLN president and professor and associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion/chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, praised the program's continuing commitment to the development of nurse education leaders: "A key outcome initially identified for the Leadership Institute's programs continues to apply: 80 percent of program participants commit to remaining in academic leadership positions following completion of the program. I am pleased the NLN recognizes essentials of the changing landscape of nurse education and can provide this level of cutting-edge leadership development for our members." LEAD and the Executive Leadership in Nursing Education and Practice programs are directed by NLN chief program officer, Dr. Janice Brewington, who also serves as director of the NLN Center for Transformational Leadership. Dr. Lynn Engelmann serves as the NLN consultant for the LEAD Program. Simulation educators will work with co-directors Drs. Mary Anne Rizzolo, NLN consultant, and Sue Forneris, Excelsior director, of the NLN Center for Innovation in Simulation and Technology. All three 2018 leadership cohorts had their first face-to-face meeting at a joint orientation program, February 12–13, in Washington, DC. LEAD and Leadership Development for Simulation Educators will return to DC June 17–21 for the NLN Leadership Retreat at the League office; executive program participants will meet at the Intensive Executive Leadership Forum, July 15–19, also at the NLN in Washington, DC. Finally, all three groups will meet together again in a Pre-Summit Leadership Workshop in Chicago in September.
