Washington, DC, June 20, 2018 —
The National League for Nursing (NLN) urges the Administration to stop the inhumane process of separating immigrant children from their parents as they seek asylum in the United States. The mission of the NLN is to promote excellence in nursing education to build a strong and more diverse nursing workforce to advance the health of our nation and the global community. This Department of Homeland Security family separation policy does not advance the health of our nation nor the well-being of the global community.
There are four dynamic and integrated core values that permeate the NLN and are reflected in its work: Caring, Integrity, Diversity/Inclusion, and Excellence. This newly introduced policy goes against Caring — the promotion of health, healing and hope in response to the human condition; it challenges the Integrity of all Americans — respect for the dignity and moral wholeness of every person without conditions or limitations; it contravenes Diversity and Inclusion — affirmation of the uniqueness of and differences among persons, ideas, values, and ethnicities; and as a result destroys Excellence — the co-creating and implementation of transformative strategies with daring ingenuity. We stand together with our nursing colleagues urging the Administration to protect the health and wellness of all children — including immigrant children. We stand with our colleagues urging the Administration to reverse this policy. The NLN has joined other nursing organizations in a joint statement encouraging the United States government to end separation of immigrant families at US borders.
