Washington, DC, July 31, 2018 —
The National League for Nursing (NLN), the nation's oldest nursing association, announced today that its CEO has accepted an invitation to join the Founder's Council of the United States of Care, a nonpartisan organization that works to ensure equal access to quality, affordable health care for all Americans. The NLN's Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, is part of a cohort of twelve whose appointment, effective immediately, has expanded the Founder's Council from 59 to 71 members.
She joins a board of influential and respected leaders across the spectrum of health care and public policy who bring a diversity of perspectives to the organization's mission. They include: Atul Guwande, MD; former astronaut Mark Kelly; former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords; and Kaiser CEO and Chairman Bernard Tyson. Dr. Malone also serves on the boards of the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Institute of Medicine. (A more complete bio of Dr. Malone is available on the NLN website) Newly appointed to the Council with Dr. Malone are these other senior level health care executives and patient advocates: Peter Bach of Memorial Sloan Kettering's Center for Health Policy and Outcomes; Donald Berwick of Institute for Healthcare Improvement; David Brailer of Health Evolution; Matt Cortland, a patient advocate and lawyer; Charles Grim of Cherokee Nation Health Services; Thomas Priselac of Cedars-Sinai Health System; Ninfa Saunders of Navicent Health; Lan Sena, community leader and health care advocate; Meena Seshamani of MedStar Health; screenwriter, producer and Alzheimer's Disease patient advocate, Randi Singer; and Gary Wertish of Minnesota Farmers Union. Council members participate in learning events, provide informal advice and guidance, and act as resources and ambassadors for United States of Care. "Having Bev become a part of the US of Care's Founder’s Council highlights the increasingly visible role nurse educators and nursing education occupies in the ongoing national dialogue surrounding issues of patient care and advocacy of quality, affordable health care as a basic human right that must be made universally accessible," noted G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, NLN president and professor and associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion/chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. "It is an honor to be selected as a member of the prestigious United States of Care Founder's Council. I look forward to providing insight from the nurse education perspective and developing solutions that improve access to health care for all," said Dr. Malone.
