| NLN to Honor State-Affiliated Constituent Leagues NLN Education Summit in Chicago | ||

Each year at its Education Summit, the National League for Nursing recognizes one of its Constituent Leagues and a Constituent League leader for outstanding contributions to advancing the mission of the NLN, and this year is no exception. In fact, for the first time, in 2018, the NLN has chosen two league officers to receive its top leadership honor, the Excellence in Leadership Award, one of which is being made posthumously.
The Constituent League awards will be presented on Thursday morning, September 13, following the annual CEO Summit Address by Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, in a convocation that includes the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education scholarship, research grants and Jonas Scholar awards. "Our Constituent Leagues are the state and regional voices of the NLN," observed NLN President G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, a professor and associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion/chief diversity officer at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. "We count on them to help spread the NLN message of sustained, inclusive, culturally sensitive educational excellence in the preparation of the next generation of nurses to deliver outstanding patient care, advancing the health of the nation and the global community." Added NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN: "We owe a debt of gratitude to all NLN Constituent Leagues and their leadership and salute the 2018 award winners, chosen for exceptional service." New York League for Nursing (NYLN) Within the past year, the NYLN has more than demonstrated its excellence in promoting the NLN mission and engaging nurse educators across New York State. Among the highlights of its programming:
Alyce S. Ashcraft PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF Immediate Past President, Texas League for Nursing As an active member of the NLN and Fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education, Dr. Ashcraft became involved in the reorganization of the Texas League for Nursing (TxLN) in 2011, first serving as a director from 2011-12; then treasurer, 2013-15; president, 2016-17; and currently, immediate past president. Persistence and resilience marked Dr. Ashcraft’s approach to the TxLN's rocky start, until it became a fully affiliated constituent league in 2018. Dr. Ashcraft was influential in maintaining consistency on the board of directors with her understanding of the league’s history, insistence on following by-laws, and setting of realistic goals. She was active in recruiting officers/directors from across the state, enlisting them in the work of the organization. As treasurer, she reorganized the group's finances and worked with the IRS to ensure the continuation of the TxLN’s non-profit tax-exempt status. During her presidency, the league became financially self-sustaining with a viable strategic plan, expanded membership, and instituted an effective program of communications through a strong social media presence and website development. Membership events have included a special TxLN event at the NLN Education Summit, CNE exam review workshops, and collaborative efforts with Vista College and the Texas Nurses Association. In addition, TxLN awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a TxLN member pursuing a PhD with a focus on promoting nursing education in Texas. Julie McAfooes, MS, RN, ANEF, FAAN Former Treasurer, Former Member, Board of Directors, Former OLN representative to the Ohio Action Coalition, Ohio League for Nursing Pioneer is the word that best describes the late Ms. McAfooes, who sadly died in July, following a brief illness. As a role model in the OLN, she inspired colleagues through service on the board of directors; two consecutive terms as treasurer, and most recently, as the OLN representative to the Ohio Action Coalition. In addition, she was a frequent presenter at workshops and conferences for the OLN. One of her specialties was informatics and simulation, knowledge of which she shared widely with OLN members. She was also a valuable source of information and guidance. She served as a mentor to OLN board members and all members through her consistent participation and involvement in OLN activities, as well as those of the NLN.
