The National League for Nursing (NLN) tradition of publishing new works of scholarship in time for the annual NLN Education Summit in September continues with the release of two new volumes by the NLN Press. They are now available for online purchase.

NLN Core Competencies for Nurse Educators: A Decade of Influence is the follow-up to the scholarship that revolutionized the landscape of nursing education when it was published in 2005. An NLN task group at the time identified the eight core competencies and task statements that define the academic nurse educator as an advanced practice role and in the process, developed the NLN CNE® exam, a credential now proudly held by more than sixty-one hundred academic nurse educators. Inspired by the outcomes of the first edition, the NLN once again assembled a panel of experts to synthesize current evidence for best practices in nursing education. This edition, while retaining the original framework for nurse educator competencies, provides the blueprint for implementing the role of the nurse educator into the future. In each chapter, readers will find thoughtful reviews of the evidence for each competency gleaned from research conducted from 2005 to 2017. The book concludes with a synthesis of the cross-competency findings, identification of gaps in the literature, and a guide to the next steps that will continue to define the evolving role of the academic nurse educator. The findings are discussed in the context of current recommendations for radical change in preparing health care professionals to meet future health care needs and advocates for the role of the nurse educator as a part of systemic reform. Faculty, students, and researchers will find not only a conceptual framework for educator preparation and role development but also a framework for research that more closely links the role of the nurse educator to the driving forces for improving patient care. Grounded by the current evidence for the role of the nurse educator, faculty may prepare the next generation of students to provide interdisciplinary, patient-focused, safe, and high quality care. Clinical Nurse Educator Competencies: Creating an Evidence-based Practice for Academic Clinical Nurse Educators focuses on a growing need to certify academic nurse educators serving in clinical settings in response to the continued shortage of nursing faculty. A separate NLN Task Group assembled in 2015 went about identifying and describing the role and scope of practice of the academic clinical nurse educator, delineating six core competencies and well-defined task statements. In addition, they include a comprehensive review of the available literature and what is currently known on the topic. This new NLN title is the also foundational text for the expansion of the NLN's respected CNE® credential. A distinctive credentialing exam offered for the first time this spring, the CNE®cl, has been designed to certify expertise in the role and scope of practice for academic clinical nurse educators.
