NLN Statement on Title VIII Reauthorization Bill

Washington, DC, November 13, 2018 — The National League for Nursing (NLN) applauds Representatives Dave Joyce (R-OH) and Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) for their bipartisan reintroduction of the Title VIII Workforce Reauthorization Act. The reintroduction and reauthorization of this bill ensures that the Title VIII nursing workforce development programs at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) provide education and training to nurses and nurse faculty to improve access to, and quality of, health care in underserved areas. Representatives Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Rodney Davis (R-IL), Doris Matsui (D-CA), Kathy Castor (D-FL), Lauren Underwood (D-IL), and David McKinley (R-WV) are also original cosponsors of this important legislation.

The changing landscape of patient care, driven by greater consumer engagement, practice-driven technologies, and virtual health care, provides a unique context for teaching and learning. Teaching with and about emerging technology is a fundamental curriculum component of nursing education. Providing nursing care in a highly technological, connected work environment is the future of nursing practice (NLN 2015).

Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, NLN president, associate vice chancellor for /chief diversity officer and professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, praised reintroduction of the bill into the House, saying: “These important programs increase the number of nurses entering the workforce and provide support to nursing schools and institutions around the country that educate future nurses to ensure the high demand for nursing care is met in a variety of community settings, most especially those living in rural and medically underserved communities.”
