George E. Thibault, MD, who most recently served as the seventh president of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, will deliver the Keynote Address at the National League for Nursing's 2019 Education Summit at National Harbor, just south of Washington, D.C. Dr. Thibault's talk, "Humanism in the Health Professions and in Society," will kick off the gathering on Thursday, September 26. Afterward, he will accept the NLN President's Award, the League's top honor, in recognition of his long, distinguished career in medicine and medical education as well as his groundbreaking contributions to breaking down the traditional silo-approach to health professions education.
"Dr. Thibault is someone who knows well the complexity of the changing health care landscape. Furthermore, and perhaps more importantly, he is a most caring and decent man and leader," said NLN President G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN. "Dr. Thibault has been honored by his peers for his work, including being named an honorary Fellow by the American Academy of Nursing in 2017. He was also the recipient of the 2nd Century Award from Columbia University School of Nursing last year." Dr. Thibault retired after serving for more than 10 years as president of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, a national philanthropy dedicated to improving the education of health professionals through investments in inter-professional education and teamwork and care for underserved communities. Prior to that, he was vice president of clinical affairs at Partners Healthcare System in Boston and founding director of the Academy at Harvard Medical School (HMS), created to recognize outstanding medical educators and promote innovations in medical education. He was also the first Daniel D. Federman Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at HMS, now holding the title of Federman Professor, Emeritus. "As we all look toward the future of nursing education, the National League for Nursing is thrilled to bring someone of Dr. Thibault's stature, well known for demonstrating visionary leadership, to speak to the Summit theme of Purpose, Power, and Passion," said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. "His record is a clear reflection of his understanding that nurses, nurse educators, and other health care professionals are critical partners in achieving the best possible health outcomes for patients and their families." Dr. Thibault has chaired the boards of the Institute of Health Professions at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the New York Academy of Medicine, on whose board he still serves. Other high-profile national service has included the White House Fellows Commission in the Obama Administration; 12 years as chair of the Special Medical Advisory Group for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs; and membership in the National Academy of Medicine. Testing Expert Philip Dickison Will Speak at the National Faculty Meeting On the concluding day of the Summit, Saturday, September 28, Philip D. Dickison, PhD, RN, chief officer of operations and examinations at the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), will be the featured speaker at the National Faculty Meeting. According to those in attendance at the 2018 NLN Summit, this year's participants are in for a treat. "When Phil addressed the group last year as part of a special session on Next Generation NCLEX and efforts to measure clinical judgment, the room was packed," said NLN President Alexander. "Expect the unexpected," said Dr. Malone, NLN CEO. "This is an opportunity to ask Phil additional questions and offer comments. We all challenge each other at our National Faculty Meeting." Before adding the operations portfolio to his title at NCSBN in 2017, Dr. Dickison was the agency's chief officer of examinations. His expanded role includes oversight of programs and services at state boards of nursing, including departments of examinations; marketing and communications; performance measurement and standard setting; and member relations and human resources. Active in the certification and licensure community for more than 30 years, prior to joining NCSBN in 2010, he served as director of health professions testing at Elsevier, Inc. and associate director at the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. He also served 11 years in the United States Air Force as a medical service specialist (medic). The author of numerous papers and articles, he is a member of the Psychometric Society and the Association of Test Publishers. Dr. Dickison earned his BBA from Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Ohio and his doctorate in quantitative research in evaluation and measurement in education from the Ohio State University.
