| Washington, DC — George E. Thibault, MD, and Marilyn H. Oermann, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, will share the stage at the opening session of the National League for Nursing 2019 Education Summit in the Greater Washington, D.C., area, as both are called to accept the NLN President's Award on Friday, September 27. This prestigious honor is presented each year at the Summit in recognition of distinguished career achievements. This year's ceremony will follow Dr. Thibault's keynote address, "Humanism in the Health Professions and in Society," which will kick off the convention. "George and Marilyn are two of the most thoughtful, visionary leaders in medical and nursing education today," said NLN President G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, professor and former associate vice chancellor/chief diversity officer of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "Through their decades of experience and unique skill sets, they have each contributed immeasurably to advancing excellence in patient care and the health of our nation and global society. It is my privilege to present them with the National League for Nursing’s highest recognition." Dr. Thibault, who retired in 2018 as president of the Macy Foundation where he served for 10 years, has been long known for his groundbreaking efforts to break down the traditional silo-approach to health professions education. Prior to that, he was vice president of clinical affairs at Partners Healthcare System in Boston and founding director of the Academy at Harvard Medical School (HMS), created to recognize outstanding medical educators and promote innovations in medical education. He has also chaired the boards of the Institute of Health Professions at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the New York Academy of Medicine (on whose board he still serves). Other high-profile national service has included the White House Fellows Commission in the Obama Administration; 12 years as chair of the Special Medical Advisory Group for the Department of Veteran's Affairs; and membership in the National Academy of Medicine. He has held a variety of leadership positions in medicine and medical education, playing a central a central role in curriculum reform at HMS, helping craft the New Pathway Curriculum and a new integrated curriculum. Dr. Thibault has received numerous academic awards, prizes, and honors from educational institutions. Dr. Oermann, the Thelma M. Ingles Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing at Duke University, has focused her scholarship on nursing education with an emphasis on evaluation in nursing and studies of the nursing literature. Her current research is on predatory publishing in nursing. Dr. Oermann is the author or co-author of 21 books — several of which have won national awards — more than 190 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and a wide variety of other publications. She lectures widely on writing for publication and nursing education topics. Dr. Oermann is a member of the American Academy of Nursing and NLN Academy of Nursing Education. She has earned the NLN Award for Excellence in Nursing Education Research, the Sigma Theta Tau International Elizabeth Russell Belford Award for Excellence in Education, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Excellence Award, and the Margaret Comerford Freda Award for Editorial Leadership in Nursing from the International Academy of Nursing Editors.
