National League for Nursing Elects New President & President-Elect for 2019–2021 Terms

| Washington, DC — As the National League for Nursing 2019 Education Summit drew to a close on September 28 in Washington, D.C., the League announced the results of its annual elections. Patricia S. Yoder-Wise, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAONL, FAAN, ANEF, was duly elected to head the League's Board of Governors as president for a two-year term, effective immediately. The new NLN president-elect is Kathleen Poindexter, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF who was voted and sworn in to serve for the next two-years as well.
In addition, a new Board secretary, Cheryl Killion, PhD, RN, FAAN and Governor at-Large Mark Hand, PhD, RN, CNE have been elected. Anne Krouse, PhD, MSN, MBA, RN, dean of Widener University School of Nursing, continues to serve in her 3-year term as Board treasurer. "I am excited to have Pat step into the National League for Nursing presidency, a role she has been preparing for as president-elect for the past two years. She will continue to work closely with me and the League's staff and volunteers," said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. "Her contributions to the Board of Governors and to the League have already proven invaluable, and we look forward to advancing our mission together, as her term as president begins." Dr. Malone added, "On behalf of the National League for Nursing, I also enthusiastically welcome the newest additions to the Board of Governors and express my deepest appreciation to those continuing to serve our association." Dr. Yoder-Wise, who had been serving since 2017 as president-elect, and before that as NLN treasurer, is dean emerita of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and a professor there. She is also president of the Wise Group, a Lubbock-based private consulting practice in nursing and nursing education that she established. Dr. Yoder-Wise brings to the NLN teaching experience in every type of nursing education program, from nursing assistant through doctoral and continuing education. She is the author of Leading and Managing in Nursing and leadership/competence articles and editor of The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing /Nursing Forum. Yoder-Wise also has served in leadership capacities for a number of highly respected professional associations, among them past president of the Texas Nurses Association, American Nurses Credentialing Center, and CGEAN, as well as treasurer of the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Poindexter is assistant dean of undergraduate programs and associate professor in the College of Nursing at Michigan State University in Lansing. Her distinguished career in nursing education and administration has been marked by scholarship, leadership, and service on the local, national, and international levels, including numerous publications, honors, and awards for teaching and research. A league member since 2003, Dr. Poindexter has a long history of service to the NLN, including as chair of nurse educator certification and secretary, both elected positions on the national board of the NLN Certification Commission; member, Scholar Awards Review Committee; and as an NLN Ambassador. She is also a member of the Michigan League for Nursing, an NLN Constituent League, in which she has been active since 2011. Secretary Dr. Cheryl Killion is an associate professor in the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. With a doctorate in cultural anthropology from the University of California, she has made cultural aspects of health, family health, qualitative research methods, health disparities, and self-management among African Americans specialized foci of her teaching and research. She was also recently honored by Southern Illinois University, where she received her baccalaureate degree in nursing, as an inductee into the university's Hall of Fame. The new governor-at-large, Dr. Mark Hand, who teaches at East Carolina University (ECU) in Greenville, has been involved with the NLN since 2000 and led the North Carolina League for Nursing as its president from 2009 until 2014. Dr. Hand credited that experience with giving him many opportunities for leadership that he wouldn't have had otherwise. He began his career in nursing education after a decade spent working in day treatment and daycare centers for the mentally ill. There, he met patients who had suffered head trauma whom he became determined to help. A lunchtime conversation with an operating room nurse launched his own education in nursing.
