National League for Nursing Applauds Senate Committee Approval of the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act in the Senate

Legislation Extends Critical Nurse & Nurse Faculty Education
& Training Programs
Washington, DC — The National League for Nursing commends the bipartisan membership of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee for its vote today to approve the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2019 (S. 1399) introduced by Senators Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), clearing the legislation for a vote by the full Senate. The committee’s action comes three days after the House of Representatives unanimously approved a companion bill (H.R. 728) to reauthorize federal funding for nursing workforce development programs at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). These programs provide vital education and training to nurses and nurse faculty to improve access to and quality of health care in underserved areas.

"Our nation needs more nurses and nurse faculty to continue to meet the high demand for nursing care in a variety of community settings, most especially people living in rural and medically underserved communities. This legislation ensures that all nursing schools can carry on their mission to prepare the next generation of nurses," said NLN President Patricia S. Yoder-Wise, RN, EdD, NEA-BC, ANEF, FANOL, FAAN, professor and dean emerita at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, editor-in-chief for The Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing and the Nursing Forum, and president of the Wise Group.

"The National League for Nursing is delighted to see both chambers of Congress taking action to enact the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2019 into law this year," said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. "We commend the bipartisan leadership in both the House and the Senate for advancing this long-overdue legislation."

The changing landscape of patient care, driven by greater consumer engagement, practice-driven technologies and virtual health care, provides a unique context for teaching and learning. Using and teaching about emerging technology is a fundamental curriculum component of nursing education. Providing nursing care in a highly technological, connected work environment is the future of nursing practice.

The National League for Nursing fully supports the passage of the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2019 and looks forward to working with members of the Senate and House to ensure that this important bill becomes law this year.
