| Washington, DC — The National League for Nursing applauds Senate and House leaders for successfully negotiating an agreement to fund federal agencies through the remainder of Fiscal Year 2020, avoiding a potential government shutdown and increasing funding for critical nursing workforce development and research programs. The League urges Congress to pass and President Donald Trump to sign into law the "Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2020" (H.R. 1865) without delay.
"We are pleased to see bipartisan support for funding vital nursing workforce development and research programs that will now continue without disruption thanks to this agreement," said NLN President Patricia S. Yoder-Wise, RN, EdD, NEA-BC, ANEF, FANOL, FAAN, professor and dean emerita at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and president of the Wise Group. "I would like to personally thank House Appropriations Committee Chair Nita Lowey, House Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Rosa DeLauro, Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Richard Shelby and Senate Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Roy Blunt for their leadership and support of nursing education programs that support the health of millions of people across our nation," said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. The final agreement on Fiscal Year 2020 Labor-HHS-Education appropriations provides a total of $260 million for nursing workforce development programs, an increase of $10.5 million over Fiscal 2019 funding levels that includes a $5.5 million increase for the statutory programs under Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act and an additional $5 million for a new nurse practitioner optional fellowship program. The agreement also provides a $6.1 million increase in funding for the National Institute for Nursing Research, providing a total of $169.1 million in fiscal 2020 funds for the Institute within the National Institute for Health.
