| National League for Nursing Announces Transition at Nursing Education Perspectives
A Change in Editorship of the League's Well-Respected Peer-Reviewed Research Journal | ||
| Washington, DC — In its first major transition in more than 20 years, the National League for Nursing has named a new editor for its research journal Nursing Education Perspectives (NEP). Longtime editor Joyce J. Fitzpatrick PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, FNAP, FAANP, has turned over the helm to Barbara J. Patterson, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, effective with the March-April edition.
“As one of nursing education’s leading scholars and luminaries, Joyce has occupied one of the most visible roles at the National League for Nursing. We are in her debt for cultivating and publishing research that has elevated the status of Nursing Education Perspectives for it to become the premier venue for scholarship in nursing education. We wish her continued success in all her endeavors moving forward,” said NLN President Patricia S. Yoder-Wise, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAONL, FAAN, ANEF, a professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and president of The Wise Group. Dr. Fitzpatrick leaves the journal far different than she found it when she was appointed editor in 1998 of Nursing and Health Care Perspectives, as NEP was then named. Over the past 22 years, she transformed it from a magazine limited in scope to a serious scholarly research journal. In alignment with the NLN’s mission, NEP is today dedicated exclusively to advancing the science of nursing education. With the landscape of research in nursing education expanding, Dr. Fitzpatrick became increasingly selective in soliciting manuscripts that reported on rigorous multi-site studies that focused attention on NLN core values: diversity/inclusion, integrity, caring and excellence. NEP joined together two of Dr. Fitzpatrick’s career passions: research and writing. Her research priorities have been health care delivery systems; nursing leadership; public policy of health care; and geriatric mental health. The author of more than 350 publications, including 81 books, she believes that her prolific publishing is among her greatest legacies. “You can reach a wide audience through writing and then influence the direction of the field. And I happen to like to write,” she said when the American Academy of Nursing named her a Living Legend in 2016. At the time, she had won the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award 20 times. Her editorial contributions will continue as editor of Applied Nursing Research and Archives of Psychiatric Nursing and co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Nursing Education. Dr. Fitzpatrick is Elizabeth Ford Brooks Professor of Nursing, Inaugural Director of the Marian K. Shaughnessy Nurse Leadership Academy, and former dean of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. “Transitions are a time of opportunity as much as they are of change,” said NLN CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN, in welcoming Dr. Fitzpatrick’s successor. “We have the highest confidence that Barbara will continue on the path Joyce forged, to build the content and quality of the NLN’s research journal, worthy of its reputation in nursing education and of remaining a valuable benefit of NLN membership.” Serving under Dr. Fitzpatrick as editor of NEP’s Research Briefs section, Dr. Patterson is well prepared to lead NEP into the next decade and beyond. At NEP, she’s also been a manuscript reviewer, editorial writer, and in 2018, co-editor of a special edition on PhD/DNP collaboration in nursing education research. With a long and accomplished record as a scholar of nursing education and of service to the NLN, she has been, since 2017, the distinguished scholar in the NLN/Chamberlain Center for Advancing the Science of Nursing Education, while also serving as Distinguished Professor and associate dean for scholarship and inquiry, Widener University School of Nursing, Chester, Pennsylvania From 2012 to 2015, Dr. Patterson chaired the NLN’s Research Review Panel, which reviews nursing education research grants. She further served on a host of NLN committees, panels, presentations at workshops and webinars, and task forces. Most recently, she participated, along with peer veteran nurse educator-scholars, in reviewing and revising competencies for academic nurse educators. As part of that project, Dr. Patterson co-authored the chapter Competency VII: Engage in Scholarship in the 2019 National League for Nursing publication A Decade of Influence. Academic Nurse Educator Competencies: Creating an Evidence-Based Practice for Nurse Educators (J. Halstead, editor, 2019). Dr. Patterson was named a Fellow in the NLN’s Academy of Nursing Education (ANEF) in 2011 and a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2019. In her first editorial as editor of NEP, Dr. Patterson praised her predecessor while vowing to “continue disseminating robust, high quality research and evidence-based innovations that challenge and expand our teaching practices to ensure that the next generation of nurses and nurse educators are well prepared and ready to educate students to improve global health. I welcome diversity of thought and perspective, as well as scholarly dialogue and debate as NEP transitions into the next decade.” Nursing Education Perspectives is published bimonthly for the National League for Nursing by Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc.
