Washington, DC — The National League for Nursing and Chamberlain University College of Nursing have agreed to continue their collaboration in the NLN/Chamberlain University College of Nursing Center for the Advancement of the Science of Nursing Education, recently signing a new formal Memorandum of Understanding.
The initial agreement that in 2012 established the Center served as the first building block in the League’s campaign to address an urgent call for reform in nursing education and health care for the 21st century sounded by the federal Institute of Medicine. Chamberlain University joined the National League for Nursing with a significant investment in dollars and professional resources in the Center to promote evidence-based nursing education and the scholarship of teaching.
Over nearly a decade, the Center, now under the direction of NLN Distinguished Scholar Barbara Patterson, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, has deepened and broadened the science of nursing education through research grants; the League’s peer-reviewed research journal, Nursing Education Perspectives; other leading edge publications; Scholarly Writing Retreats; and faculty development in evidence-based pedagogy that aligns nursing education with national health care initiatives.
Another hallmark of the Center’s success has been donations from outside foundations such as Jonas Philanthropies and national nursing research societies that support excellence in nursing. These have increased the Center’s number of research grants to nurse scientists and awards to doctoral candidates pursuing advanced degrees with a focus in nursing education science.
“We are delighted that Chamberlain University College of Nursing shares the League’s support for the value of our joint endeavor and will remain our partner in supporting robust scientific inquiry and cutting-edge research. We expect these to instill ever-higher standards of excellence in nursing education and create sustainable improvements in health care access, delivery, and outcomes for patients and communities,” said NLN Chair Dr. Patricia S. Yoder-Wise, RN, EdD, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAONL, FAAN, Professor and Dean Emerita at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and president of The Wise Group.
NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN said, “As the premier national nursing organization to fund nursing education research, the National League for Nursing is in the unique position of being able to maximize its collaboration with Chamberlain University College of Nursing. Our partnership and their generous support will continue the Center’s commitment to nurturing scholar-educators and advocating for and implementing research initiatives within academic institutions dedicated to transformative professional education and health care reform. I am excited to see where the next decade of our collaboration leads.”
“Chamberlain University’s College of Nursing is committed to encouraging evidence-based research and pedagogy that supports the advancement of quality nursing education in alignment with national healthcare and health equity initiatives,” said Chamberlain University President Karen Cox. “As the largest nursing school in the country, it is an honor to partner with the National League for Nursing to strengthen an academic foundation for quality nursing education that also addresses workforce needs. Through this collaboration we can have an even wider impact and capacity to transform the nursing student experience, and positively impact patient outcomes and healthy communities.”
