NLN Praises Generous Sponsorships to Support First Invitational Utstein Global Conference for Expert Nurse Educators in Helsinki, Finland, June 7-8

Laerdal Medical & Health Carousel Foundation Expand Role as Longstanding Supporters of Nursing Education

Washington, DC — As leaders in nursing worldwide prepare to gather this summer for the inaugural Utstein Global Conference for Expert Nurse Educators — organized and hosted by the National League for NursingLaerdal Medical and the Health Carousel Foundation have stepped up with substantial funding support for this event.

The Utstein conference, which will be held June 7-8 in Helsinki, Finland, immediately precedes the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress, creating an ideal opportunity for NLN Utstein participants to continue networking and collaborating with colleagues.

The NLN Utstein conference has been named for the famed Utstein Monastery in Norway where previous major international conferences have taken place. Adapting the classic Utstein process, based on the World Cafe Model, the event in Helsinki will feature presentations by plenary speakers who are experts in nursing education, clinical practice, and regulations, and include nurse leaders from low and middle-income countries.

In addition, small working groups will engage in developing consensus around critical issues, gaps, and solutions for nursing education, research and practice. Another facet of their mandate is to help craft a shared global vision to build a strong, diverse, practice-ready nursing workforce and enhance innovation in teaching modalities and technologies.

The Laerdal Medical and the Health Carousel Foundation financial contributions will make it possible for nursing educators from far-flung developing nations to attend and will also help support speakers and panelists who will bring their wide-ranging scholarship and pedagogical expertise to broaden the reach and impact of the conference.

“The National League for Nursing and our generous donors, Laerdal Medical and Health Carousel Foundation, aim to provide an experience that is singular, significant and impactful,” said NLN Chair Patricia Sharpnack, DNP, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAAN, Dean and Strawbridge Professor at the Breen School of Nursing and Health Professions at Ursuline College in Ohio. “Data from the Utstein meeting will be widely shared, and we anticipate that outcomes will provide a platform for deeper dives into data-driven implementation, spur further research, and encourage consultation among schools of nursing, clinical partners and regulators across global and diverse academic and health care communities.”

“Laerdal Medical and the Health Carousel Foundation recognize the urgent priority to assemble global nurse leaders at a time when nursing education is at a crossroads,” said NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN. “For the past 15 years, there has been growing concern that nursing has not kept pace with the rapid changes and advances in knowledge and technology that affect patient care and accessibility. With nursing education fundamental to safe, quality and equitable patient care, the journey to identify best practices and solutions to rapidly and radically transform nursing education may take flight at this Utstein Conference.”

Laerdal Medical, an industry leader in simulation technology for health care education and practice, has collaborated with the National League for Nursing for over 20 years on multiple projects, including professional development. The most recent initiative is the NLN Simulation Innovation Resource Center (SIRC), which provides free online simulation resources and professional networking and dialogue.

In addition, for many years, Laerdal Medical has been the prime sponsor of the Debra Spunt Memorial Lecture, a health care technology-focused major presentation, at the annual NLN Education Summit.

Health Carousel Foundation’s Executive Director Andrew Lingo said, “We see tremendous value in bringing together global nursing leaders to shape relevant, consistent and modern nurse education standards and practices. It is our vision that every patient has access to qualified health care professionals when and wherever they need them.” The Health Carousel Foundation will also sponsor the attendance of several nurse educators serving in prominent roles in nursing councils, ministries of health, NGOs, and academic nursing institutions.

The National League for Nursing has had longstanding ties with the Health Carousel Foundation, which is committed to investing in initiatives that promote the sustainability, development and ethical recruitment of nurses in the U.S. and globally, with a mission to advance the nursing profession and make quality health care universally accessible.

The Health Carousel Foundation supports the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education by funding an annual scholarship award to a foreign-educated nurse working towards an advanced degree in a U.S. college or university who has made a stated commitment to a career in nursing education. The Health Carousel Foundation is also represented on the foundation’s Advisory Council.
