Keith Weeks to Offer Valued Perspective on Nursing Education & Mathematics

Washington, DC — To further advance patient safety and professional nursing standards in drug dosage calculation, medicines management, and nursing mathematics education and practice, the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education  welcomes Keith Weeks PhD, RN, BSc (Hons), BEd, DipN, LPE, SFHEA, founder, president and director at safeMedicate, to the prestigious Advisory CouncilsafeMedicate is an internationally recognized medicines calculations and nursing mathematics education solutions company headquartered in Wales, United Kingdom, and in Florida.

Dr. Weeks co-founded safeMedicate in 2004 in partnership with CEO Norman Woolley and is responsible for leading the international research and development team's translational research and science program. In collaboration with Math Director Alex Weeks, he leads the design of innovative authentic virtual clinical education environments to advance patient safety and clinical, education and professional practice standards.

Based on the 35-year program of seminal Safety in Numbers research, developed by Weeks et al, safeMedicate programs employ unique virtual environments to support medicine calculations and nursing mathematics competence development, transfer, and application across the situated world of health care practice and the abstract world of classroom mathematics. 

safeMedicate is distributed widely within the international nursing community of practice. It informs the curricula of over 90% of nursing schools in the UK, and the competence development of nursing students and RNs across North American, European, Middle Eastern and Australasian regions. To date, circa 7 million safeMedicate competence assessments have been undertaken, contributing to an ever-widening impact on international patient safety and professional nursing standards.

Dr. Weeks’ extensive professional history and academic achievement span service as a senior clinical RN, a senior nursing science and math educator, and professor in health care numeracy and education. He holds honors degrees in physiology and applied biological sciences, a BEd in health professional education, and a PhD in health care math education, undertaken at Cardiff University, University of South Wales, and University of the West of England. He is a Senior Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy, awarded for his expertise and leadership in health care professional education.
