bevphoto Dear Colleagues,

It’s quite clear. Elections have consequences. At the NLN we have been fortunate over the years to have nominated and elected supremely capable leaders to chair our key committees and serve as officers and members of the NLN Board of Governors. At the end of April we will once again announce that the election season is in progress. Please take part, read the information provided about candidates, and make your choices known. With your participation we will continue the NLN legacy of good governance and secure the far-sighted leadership we need to steer our course during this challenging period for health care and nursing education. You will be asked to vote for key positions, including president-elect, and approve revisions to our by-laws. Look for the notice and take action.

We have another area that calls for your participation. Next Tuesday, April 25, is #NLNVoices Day on the Hill, and you can take part. Just as in past years, the NLN Board of Governors and Public Policy Committee will visit Congress to discuss nursing’s priority issues. You can participate virtually, emailing, tweeting, and posting messages on Facebook to your Congressional delegation.

To participate, go to the NLN’s Advocacy Action Center, enter your contact information, and click the blue “Register” button. If you have responded to an NLN action alert in the past and clicked the “remember me” box at the bottom of the page, your contact information will already populate the information boxes. Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email with links to the #NLNVoices Day on the Hill page and resources. As the day approaches, you will receive an email detailing specific actions to take anytime on April 25th.

As you can imagine, our legislative concerns this year have to do with funding. In addition, we need your help to encourage House members to become cosponsors of H.R. 959, the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act, which reauthorizes nursing workforce development programs at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The act was introduced by Representatives David Joyce (R-OH) and Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and has 18 bipartisan cosponsors.

As always, the NLN Advocacy Action Center allows you to quickly send an email or tweet a message to your Representatives, and/or post a message on their Facebook page.

If your goal is to learn more about public policy, I hope you will enroll in the two-day NLN Public Policy Workshop, scheduled for June 5 and 6. On the first day you will learn about the NLN’s public policy and advocacy priorities, pressing issues before Congress, and strategies for successful advocacy. On the second day you will meet with members of Congress and their staff. I hope you will register for this inaugural event.

Now as never before we need strong and well-informed advocates for nursing education and health care in our legislatures, statewide and nationally. The NLN and other major nursing organizations have an essential role in educating and collaborating with policymakers, and we are best when our members take an active role. This is a great year to step forward and take action. There is always room at the table for leadership. There is always room for interprofessional collaboration. There is always room for safe, effective, quality patient care.

All the best,
