2017 Federal Budget Published on February 9
On February 9, the president’s budget for fiscal year (FY) 2017 was released to the public. While Congress ultimately determines funding levels, the president’s budget outlines his funding priorities for the government. According to the congressional budget justifications (links below), the president proposes $229.472 million for the Title VIII nursing workforce development programs (level funding with FY 2016 enacted levels) at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

As a reminder, the Title VIII comprehensive geriatric education program was folded into the broader Title VII geriatric education program at HRSA in FY 2016. HRSA stated the combined competition would “improve health outcomes for older adults by integrating geriatrics with primary care, maximizing patient and family engagement, and transforming the healthcare system.” The decrease in the overall funding for the Title VIII nursing education workforce programs in FY 2016 was due to the consolidation of the Title VIII comprehensive geriatric program with the Title VII geriatric education program. President Obama continues this trend in his FY 2017 budget.

More information about HRSA’s Title VIII nursing workforce development programs can be found through the following links: HRSA FY 2017 Congressional Budget Justification:
Title VIII funding levels and program descriptions can be found beginning on page 155 of the document.

The president’s budget is the official first step in the budget and appropriations process. Congress will begin crafting budget proposals this month. Stay tuned for more information as the FY 2017 budget and appropriations process moves forward.
