Dear Colleagues:

The NLN CNEA’s accreditation activities continue to expand. We recently held our first election for the NLN CNEA Board of Commissioners and the Nominations Committee. As a result, in January 2017 the NLN CNEA will welcome four new members to the NLN CNEA Board of Commissioners and three new Nominations Committee members. A brief biography of each new commissioner is below. They are joined by Drs. Patricia Castaldi, Cathleen Shultz, Ngozi Nkongho and Amy Pettigrew who were re-elected to their second term on the board. Dr. Shultz will assume the position of chair of the NLN CNEA Board of Commissioners effective January 2017.

I want to take this opportunity to thank four board commissioners whose terms have come to an end: Drs. Joan Darden, Cole Edmonson, Betsy Frank, and Nancy Maebius. They have each served the NLN CNEA very capably from the beginnings of the agency, sharing their nursing education expertise and leadership skills. Their individual and collective contributions to the success of the NLN CNEA have been significant. I especially want to acknowledge Dr. Darden and thank her for her leadership as chair of the Board of Commissioners for the past two years.

In addition to conducting our first election, the NLN CNEA has been busy implementing its accreditation activities. As you read this newsletter, we will be completing our third 2016 application cycle for programs seeking pre-accreditation from the NLN CNEA. We also recently conducted our first on-site program evaluation visits in September and October and have a number of on-site program evaluation visits scheduled for 2017. A listing of the programs that have been pre-accredited by the NLN CNEA or have hosted on-site campus visits can be found on the NLN CNEA website at www.nln.org/cnea. To date we have also appointed more than 100 on-site program evaluators and provided them with training to serve on our evaluation teams. You will find the 2017 pre-accreditation application cycle dates on the NLN CNEA website.

NEW BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, is dean and professor of the Duke University School of Nursing, vice chancellor for nursing affairs at Duke University and associate vice president for academic affairs for nursing at Duke University Health System. Prior to joining Duke, Dr. Broome was dean of the Indiana University School of Nursing, where she was awarded the rank of distinguished professor. Widely regarded as an expert, scholar, and leader in pediatric nursing research and practice, as well as a researcher related into to the ethics of informed consent and assent for children in research, research misconduct in clinical trials and, most recently, ethical dilemmas in publishing. Currently, Dr. Broome is editor-in-chief of Nursing Outlook, the official journal of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN) and the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science. In 2014, the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research named Dr. Broome one of 12 nursing leaders nationwide for the inaugural FNINR Ambassador for Scientific Advancement Program.

Linda Haddad, PhD, RN, FAAN, is currently serving as the associate dean for academic affairs at University of Florida, College of Nursing. In addition to her wealth of expertise in nursing education and curriculum development, she has extensive experience with international health initiatives by consulting and working on projects to help train other health professionals and improve nursing education in the Middle East. She also served as dean over the Faculty of Nursing at the Jordan University of Science and Technology from 2000-2005. Dr. Haddad’s research focuses on tobacco cessation; her background is in community and public health nursing. She received a doctor of philosophy in nursing from the University of Maryland in Baltimore, a master’s degree in nursing science from the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor of science in nursing from Jordan University in Amman, Jordan.

Michelle Mahaffey Harmon, PhD, MSN, RN, works as a nurse education specialist with Henry Ford Macomb, part of the Henry Ford Health system. She demonstrates leadership and commitment to the growth of the nursing profession by mentoring and coaching new graduate nurses. She is passionate about the need to bridge the concepts from academia with the realities of practice by advocating for professional programs that will support curriculum. Dr. Harmon served as facilitator in creating and implementing Macomb’s Professional Practice Model, Shared Governance Structure, and Nurse Peer Review Committee. Additionally, she works collaboratively at the system level on developing a Graduate Nurse Residency Program. She has academic experience as a clinical adjunct faculty and serves on several advisory boards locally. An active member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Dr. Harmon won the Diversity Hero Award in 2015.

Susan B. Stillwell, DNP, RN, CNE, FAAN, ANEF, a fellow in the NLN Academy of Nursing Education and in the American Academy of Nursing, is associate professor and associate dean for graduate education at University of Portland, School of Nursing. Previously, she was assistant director of the Center for the Advancement of Evidence-based Practice at College of Nursing and Health Innovation, Arizona State University. Dr. Stillwell is an expert EBP mentor who has presented on evidence-based practice nationally and internationally, founded the first EBP Mentorship Program for Nurse Educators, and has authored and co-authored a number of publications on the evidence-based practice paradigm and innovative teaching strategies to integrate evidence-based practice across the curriculum. Dr. Stillwell is an NLN certified nurse educator and recipient of several teaching and faculty excellence awards.
