January 24, 2018 | NLN CEO Update on Teaching Resources and Partnerships

Can you feel the energy, colleagues? I feel it. It's part of this year of greatness – 2018. I experience energy and excitement each time I speak with a gathering of educators or take part in a meeting about the health of our nation and the global community. With nurses at the frontline of health care, our mission, to promote excellence in nursing education, could not be more timely. The future is truly ours to co-create through collaboration and partnerships.

It is especially exciting that two books published by the NLN have received recognition as 2017 AJN Books of the Year. And a third book, co-edited by Dr. Judith Halstead, executive director of the NLN Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation, has also been recognized, with third place in the category Professional Issues. With Dr. Gayle Roux of the University of North Dakota, Judy is co-editor of Issues and Trends in Nursing: Practice, Policy, and Leadership, now in its 2nd edition. Among the contributors to this publication are Christine Murphy, NLN director of public policy and advocacy, and Dr. Joan Frey, who chaired the NLN Public Policy Committee when she served as NLN secretary.

The two NLN honorees are Teaching with ACE.S: A Faculty Guide, edited by Dr. Elaine Tagliareni, which took third place in the category Gerontological Nursing, and Dr. Elizabeth Speakman's Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice: Creating a Blueprint for Nurse Educators, which took second place in Nursing Education/Continuing Education. Elaine's book provides a roadmap for the implementation of the NLN's signature program, Advancing Care Excellence for Seniors (ACE.S), and offers foundational evidence for the ACE.S framework along with exemplars of how faculty use ACE.S in the classroom. Dr. Speakman, who served two terms on the NLN Board of Governors, is a fellow in the NLN Academy of Nursing Education. Her book, published in collaboration with the NLN Center for Transformational Leadership, helps nurse educators develop and evaluate multidisciplinary, team-based learning opportunities for students.

For several years now, the NLN has presented a few select titles annually along with our publishing partner Wolters Kluwer Health. Our emphasis is on evidence-based practices in curriculum development and teaching-learning strategies. Our goal is to advance the science of nursing education, a concept only recently welcomed as a contribution to scholarship. I hope you will not only take a look at our bookstore but purchase several publications that are on sale now. With our most recently honored books they are essential to complete any nurse educator's library.

I know you will continue to turn to the NLN for faculty development opportunities. Our interest is the same as yours, and it is our goal to ensure that you are prepared for the many aspects of the faculty role. For example, publishing — we know that many faculty who have done amazing research or developed and evaluated innovative teaching strategies are hesitant when it comes to submitting manuscripts for publication. First, there is the issue of time — with the competing demands on faculty, this is not a small issue. And then there is the fact that many faculty are unsure of how to proceed and would benefit from personal instruction and one-on-one mentorship. The deadline for applications for the June 9–10, 2018 Scholarly Writing Retreat is coming up on February 9, and I encourage you to apply. What an amazing opportunity it is. These retreats (actually, yearlong mentoring relationships), which the NLN has offered since 2008, have helped launch the publishing careers of many talented faculty.

Note also that the deadline for 2018 NLN Nursing Education Research Grants is February 8. Thanks to you — because of your contributions to the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education — we are able to offer valuable grants for nursing education research.

We are constantly looking for ways to offer relevant faculty development opportunities and have scheduled a number for the summer (yes, colleagues, warmer days are sure to come). This summer series will be held here in Washington, DC, and includes workshops in an array of topic areas from the DNP, simulation, faculty civility, legal issues, and more.
