June 27, 2018 | NLN CEO Update on 2019 Leadership Institute | Grants | End Family Separation
XXII, Issue Number 12 June 27, 2018 |
Dear Colleagues, Last August the NLN published a remarkable little book titled Roving Leadership: Breaking Through the Boundaries, written by Dr. Sal Tagliareni and our own Dr. Janice Brewington, chief program officer and director of the NLN Center for Transformational Leadership. This book is becoming more and more important. With exquisite simplicity, it helps transform organizations and transcend barriers to success. Based on empirical evidence and true stories, it is an essential resource for reframing our understanding of leadership roles in organizations of all types. I mention this book now because we just opened the application period for the signature program for the NLN Center for Transformational Leadership — the 2019 Leadership Institute. Very likely reading this book will inspire you to apply. The Institute, which consists of three tracks, brings together a world-class faculty and dynamic curricula for full-year programs that help nurse faculty and nurses in practice develop strong leadership skills. Following is a brief description of each track:
These rigorous programs require a significant amount of time and commitment. The common denominator is a shared commitment to excellence in nursing education that results in a lasting and transformational leadership experience. We briefly surveyed members of the three 2017 cohorts about their Leadership Institute experiences. All rated the program excellent to good, and all said they would recommend it to others. I love their comments — here are a few:
Need I say more? My only recommendation is to go online now and get the details. You will definitely want to apply. Now let me share with you some other bits of information. First, we received news from the Teagle Foundation about its Liberal Arts and the Professions initiative, which aims to enable faculty to forge curricular links between BSN nursing faculty and the liberal arts so students are better prepared to engage with the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of their work as health care professionals. To be considered for a grant, review the application guidelines and submit a brief concept paper to proposals@teagle.org. Second, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is inviting nursing programs to participate in a new study involving the collection of nursing student errors and near misses. The aim of this study is to obtain baseline, aggregate data that will be used to guide the development of methods to reduce or prevent errors/near misses in the future. The NCSBN will provide programs with an innovative reporting and tracking tool, Safe Student Reports (SSR), developed by researchers Joanne Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Jane Barnsteiner, PhD, RN, FAAN. If your program is interested in participating in this study, contact Dr. Nancy Spector at nspector@ncsbn.org. For your information, an interesting Research Brief on this topic has been published online-ahead-of-print by the NLN research journal Nursing Education Perspectives: Medical-Surgical Clinical Student Error and Near Miss Event Reporting. The authors are Diane M. Rudolphi, MS, RN, Jessica Madiraca, MSN, RN, CNS, CCRN-K, and Erlinda C. Wheeler, DNS, RN, of the School of Nursing at the University of Delaware. As an NLN member, you have online access to all articles in Nursing Education Perspectives. It is a good idea to subscribe to the eTOC at neponline.net. Third, some housekeeping news. In an effort to bring you and your institution the high quality services and information you expect from the NLN, we recently upgraded our membership portal. Now when you log onto your NLN Member Account you will be prompted to reset your password if your current password does not meet the new seven-character requirement (to include one letter and one number). With the new NLN membership portal, you will be able to renew membership online, print NLN membership ID cards, and view recent payment activities, upcoming events, and committee appointments. You will continue to have your online access to Nursing Education Perspectives. Our world was rocked last week as the media uncovered the extent of the inhumane practice of separating immigrant children from their parents as they sought asylum in the United States. The NLN signed on to a joint statement with 32 other nursing organizations that called on the US government to immediately end family separation and we issued our own statement in the context of the NLN's core values of caring, integrity, diversity/inclusion, and excellence. This is a fluid situation. Shortly after the joint statement was released, President Trump issued an executive order ending family separation but did nothing to ameliorate the situation of the more than 2,000 children who are already separated from their parents. I know that many Americans — and nurses in particular — want to help in some way. This is a link to a website that offers 10 ways to help through protest and financial donations. Now is the time for roving leadership. And finally the NLN Education Summit is a good venue for discussing the many areas of interest common to nurse educators. And it is at the Summit that we also witness the emergence of powerful leaders in nursing education. We're putting the finishing touches on our 2018 Summit planning now. I don't want to spill the beans, but you certainly will not want to miss the elegant black tie 125th Anniversary Gala, with live music, dinner, dancing, and a champagne toast — and, for that matter, everything else at this historic event. It will be here before you know it. See you in Chicago at Summit 2018! All the best, Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN Chief Executive Officer
