NLN Capitol Connection - June 2017
June 6, 2017 President Slashes Funding for Title VIII Nursing Programs The president's fiscal year (FY) 2018 budget eliminates $146 million from the Title VIII nursing workforce development programs at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). In FY 2018, the president proposes $83 million for the NURSE Corps loan and scholarship program. This program funds nursing activities that provide scholarships and loan repayments in exchange for service in areas of the United States where there is a shortage of health professionals. The president’s budget eliminates all of the other Title VIII programs and funding. HRSA’s Title VIII programs received $229 million in FY 2017. The Title VIII nursing workforce development programs fill a clear need in our health care workforce and bridge the nursing and nursing faculty shortage gap. It is crucial that the federal investment meets current and future nursing and nurse faculty demands. The NLN issued a statement opposing the proposed cuts to the programs. More information on the Title VIII programs can be found on the NLN website. The NLN will continue to advocate for federal investment in nursing education programs that are essential to not only the health and well-being of our nation. The NLN also encourages our members to contact their congressional members to oppose these devastating cuts through the NLN Advocacy Action Center. The NLN Advocacy Action Center allows you to communicate with your representatives in Congress through email, Twitter, or Facebook. Here’s how:
Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act introduced in the Senate During National Nurses Week in May, Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Richard Burr (R-NC), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Susan Collins (R-ME) introduced S. 1109, the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2017. S. 1109 is the companion bill to H.R. 959 which was introduced in the House earlier this year. S. 1109/H.R. 959 reauthorizes the Title VIII nursing workforce development programs at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) with technical changes. Tell your US representative to cosponsor H.R. 959 and your senators to cosponsor S. 1109. |
