I have a bittersweet announcement for you today. Dr. Nancy Langston has stepped down as chair of the NLN Foundation for Nursing Education. Nancy’s gifts to the NLN and to nursing education cannot be overstated. After her term as NLN president ended in 2001, she helped establish the NLN Foundation and became its founding chair. When she retired from her position as dean at Virginia Commonwealth University she was once again chair of the foundation, bringing to the post great creativity, vision, and generosity of spirit. I know I will miss my partnership with Nancy. (Please watch for our upcoming announcement of the new chair.)

Join me, colleagues, in wishing Nancy the healthy, happy, and fruitful retirement she so deserves. Angela McBride uses the term preferment instead of retirement, and I have to admit that Nancy is clear about what she prefers. As you travel the country visiting our national parks and other attractions, don't be surprised if you run into Nancy, who is known for her wanderlust.

Nancy’s last public appearance on behalf of the NLN Foundation was at our recent Summit in Orlando. There she announced our goal of raising $85,000 to support our established scholarship program and preserve our history through the NLN Archives project, which will allow us to build an NLN Archive at the Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, supported by a matching grant from the Independence Foundation. I am happy to report that, due in great part to Nancy’s leadership, we are only $25,000 away from meeting our 2016 goal. And so I would like to tell you how you can help make a difference in saving the history of the NLN, the oldest nursing organization in the country. Colleagues, here are our plans for raising awareness through the November 29 #NLNGivingTuesday campaign. Giving Tuesday, celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, encourages all of us to give of our time and treasure following Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Naturally there is no need to wait for November 29 to make your contribution. The NLN Foundation for Nursing Education has many ways to give, including legacy giving through the Isabel Hampton Robb Society and gifts to our eight named endowment funds. In fact, this year, you may want to direct your gift to the Nancy Langston Nursing Education Research Fund as a further tribute to our inspiring foundation chair.

Colleagues, there are always many calls for contributions that tug the heart. As you remember the NLN Foundation, think also of those affected by Hurricane Matthew, which left enormous destruction in this country and in Haiti. Many worthy charities need your support at this time, including the Disaster Relief Fund established by the Foundation of the National Student Nurses Association in 2005 to help nursing students affected by disasters to recover and continue their education. I know it may not be strategic to mention other worthy opportunities to give, but I feel I must do so, knowing that the NLN sits in a special, different place of nursing education that will pull at your heart strings in a special and different way.

Well, colleagues, there is a lot to reflect upon this October. The leaves are beginning to turn in the Washington, DC area, and the United States capital could not be more lovely. Let’s enjoy these last days of warm weather and think about how we can share what we have with others. I cannot close without a reminder to educate yourself about the issues in the upcoming election and prepare to vote. Voting is our right and a major part of being an American citizen. The world is watching us exercise that right.
