 Dear Colleagues,Colleagues, Summit 2016 has come to an end and special early-bird savings and abstract submissions are already available for Summit 2017 in San Diego. But the memories from Orlando will live on, and the takeaways will be enduring. Indeed, photos from the Summit are ready for your enjoyment on the NLN Facebook page (all photos may be downloaded in hi-res format on our Flickr page). And videos of all the plenaries, from the keynote through the honors convocation, will be available on our You Tube channel by the time of my next Member Update. What a Summit it was. For three busy days and evenings we explored the Summit theme "Beyond Boundaries" – what it means today and what it can mean for the future, for all of us as individual nurse educators and as academic and practice partners in today's brave new health care universe. Beyond boundaries is a tricky phrase. It seems simple enough, but think about it. Essentially, it asks us to stretch our minds in all directions as we meet with and learn from colleagues near and far. It asks us to question long-held assumptions and take the risks we need to take in order to grow and thrive. It has led me to think back to seminal moments in my own career when I dared to dream and challenge the status quo. In fact, I thought about the Summit theme during every presentation during each day of the Summit, and I will keep it in mind as we move forward with new programming and new initiatives in the year ahead.
Clearly we cannot summarize the events of three days in this space. But, as I mentioned above, for those who missed the Summit or wish to share exciting moments with colleagues, you will soon be able to partake of the highlights through the NLN's You Tube channel. You may choose to start at the beginning with the remarkable keynote address by Dr. Sheila T'lou of Botswanna who told us that we must start in the community to prepare nursing students for global care. Or, you may choose to be part of President Anne Bavier's view from the cockpit as she provides a glimpse of the NLN's current and future activities. You will definitely want to listen to the thoughtful questions and comments from colleagues at our Annual Faculty Meeting. We focused on the latest findings from the NLN Faculty Census and implications of the Affordable Care Act, and then the conversation took off – well Beyond Boundaries. Or, you may want to start at the end, with the moving ceremony on Friday evening at which we celebrated seven first-time and eight re-designated NLN Centers of Excellence; 17 distinguished new fellows of the NLN Academy of Nursing Education, plus one honorary fellow; and three amazing winners of the named NLN Awards – Drs. Pam Jeffries, Deborah Raines, and Jan Nick. One presentation that will surely be viewed over and over again is this year's Debra L. Spunt Lecture, delivered by a member of the 2016 cohort of the NLN Academy of Nursing Education: Dr. Janice Palaganas. In her highly interactive and lively presentation, Janice brought us into an interprofessional debriefing session and taught us to create shared meaning through discussion. Just think – simulation was a tantalizing promise when the late Dr. Spunt headed the simulations labs at the University of Maryland and took part in the early research the NLN conducted with the support of Laerdal Medical. Thanks to her and other pioneers, we have expanded the realm of nursing education research well beyond the boundaries we knew less than two decades ago. Amazing! As she concluded her presentation, Janice reminded us that simulation is not a solution but a powerful diagnostic tool. We, she told all of us – the nurse educators in the meeting hall – we are the solution.Let's keep these words in mind as we mull over the theme for Summit 2017: Our Community of Colleagues. Remember, very early-bird registration pricing is open through November 30. (Colleagues, please note that next year the Summit takes place Thursday September 14 - Saturday September 16 – and not the usual Wednesday through Friday.) Let me conclude, colleagues, with a reminder that although the Summit is the NLN's major event, it is not by any means our only opportunity for fantastic programming. We have extended the application period for the NLN Leadership Institute to October 10. We opened the call for research grants proposals on October 1. The application period for the June 2017 Scholarly Writing Retreat is open now. And we have webinars and workshops galore on the horizon, especially NLN in Your Community, starting with six options in San Diego. Don't miss any of our announcements. Together – you and your fellow faculty, the NLN Board of Governors and our staff – we form a remarkable team. Before I close, congratulations to long-time board member Dr. Theresa Shellenbarger on her election as secretary. And a heartfelt thank you to those governors who served so ably and given their time and talent so graciously: outgoing secretary Dr. Joan Frey, Dr. Gail Baumlein, Dr. Elaine Patterson, and Dr. George Velianoff.
