Applying for Pre-Accreditation Candidacy
Volume 2, Issue 2
Summer 2016
Dear Colleagues:

The warm summer days are upon us, and I hope that each of you will have the opportunity to take some time for rest and relaxation. NLN CNEA staff, commissioners, and committee members remain engaged in the activities of the commission’s work. NLN CNEA recently celebrated another milestone with the Board of Commissioners’ June 24, 2016 action on programs applying for pre-accreditation status with CNEA. The listing of programs granted pre-accreditation status with CNEA can be found on our website at www.nln.org/cnea. We will hold our first on-site program evaluation visits this fall in September and October 2016.

I would like to use this summer CNEA Connections newsletter to provide an overview of the application process for CNEA pre-accreditation. As always, we are happy to answer any questions you may have about your individual program. Our contact information is listed at the end of this newsletter.

Applying for Pre-Accreditation Candidacy
Achieving pre-accreditation status with NLN CNEA is the result of a formal accreditation action that is taken by the NLN CNEA Board of Commissioners (BOC), based upon recommendations received from the CNEA Initial Program Application Subcommittee (IPASC). The IPASC (a specialized subcommittee of the NLN CNEA Program Review Committee) members thoroughly review each program applicant’s materials prior to forwarding a recommendation to the BOC. The review is based upon a consideration that the applicant program has provided CNEA with evidence to support a reasonable conclusion that the program will achieve full compliance with the CNEA accreditation standards within the allotted three-year time frame of pre-accreditation. The IPASC recommendation along with the program’s application is forwarded to the BOC for its review and final action.

The BOC may act to take one of two possible actions on the application for pre-accreditation candidacy: 1) grant pre-accreditation or 2) deny pre-accreditation. The granting of pre-accreditation status does not guarantee the program will be ultimately successful in achieving CNEA initial accreditation. Please refer to the policy on Pre-Accreditation Candidacy for complete details on the process and possible outcomes.

Pre-accreditation candidacy applications are accepted and reviewed by CNEA three times a year in April, August, and December. The complete pre-accreditation review cycle takes approximately three months to complete from application to BOC action. Here is the remaining schedule for those programs wishing to apply for pre-accreditation status in 2016-2017; additional application dates for 2018 will be available by the end of 2016:

Programs granted pre-accreditation status must complete the accreditation process (including BOC action on the accreditation decision) within the three year pre-accreditation window or pre-accreditation status will be terminated by CNEA. With the appropriate notification to CNEA, programs holding pre-accreditation status can proceed to scheduling their on-site program evaluation visit and submitting their self-study at any time during the three-year pre-accreditation term, as long as the accreditation process is completed and action is taken by the BOC prior to the lapse of the pre-accreditation term. It is the program’s faculty and administrative leaders’ responsibility to determine when to move ahead with completing the accreditation process within the pre-accreditation term. The CNEA staff is available to answer questions about scheduling and how long to anticipate it taking to complete the accreditation process.

How do you know if your program is ready to apply for pre-accreditation candidacy with CNEA?

bullet The first step is for faculty and program administrators to carefully consider the CNEA Standards of Accreditation. While programs are not required to be fully compliant with each standard during the pre-accreditation application process, they do need to conduct a thorough self-assessment to determine if they can provide evidence and demonstrate the resources needed to allow the IPASC and BOC to consider a reasonable conclusion that the program will become fully compliant with all standards within the three year pre-accreditation window, should it be granted.
bullet Another consideration is the time frame by which the program wishes to achieve accreditation with CNEA. Achieving pre-accreditation is the first step in the overall accreditation process and needs to be timed so that the program can proceed to scheduling on-site program evaluation visits within a time frame that works with the program’s accreditation needs.
As always, please feel free to contact Andrea Browning or me with any questions you might have about beginning the pre-accreditation process.

NLN CNEA WORKSHOP ON NOVEMBER 18

Are you preparing your program for initial accreditation? Do you have questions about how to plan and organize your program’s goal of achieving accreditation?

NLN CNEA has scheduled a full-day “how-to” workshop on Friday, November 18 in Washington, DC designed for those nursing program administrators and faculty who are new to the accreditation process, and for those who are responsible for guiding a never-before accredited program through the initial accreditation process. Topics to be covered include applying NLN CNEA accreditation standards to your program; preparing faculty, staff, and students to participate in the accreditation process; and approaches to organizing the program’s self-study.

“Preparing Your Program for NLN CNEA Accreditation: Beginning the Journey” will take place Friday, November 18 from 8:30 am - 4:00 pm at the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Barbara Jordan Conference Center in Washington, DC. Click here for additional information and to register.
