Purpose:
Provide nurse educators with skills to revise multiple-choice test items to be more culturally inclusive.
Objectives: - Explain the basic principles of linguistic modification.
- Recognize the importance of linguistic modification as a means of leveling the playing field in multiple choice nursing assessments for EAL students.
- Identify unnecessary linguistic and semantic complexity in multiple-choice test items.
- Reword test items to reduce linguistic and semantic complexity without affecting the nursing content of the items.
- Verify the process of acquiring proficiency in written academic English as well as acquiring proficiency in discipline-specific writing.
- Describe what kind of feedback is most helpful and effective for EAL writers.
- Demonstrate giving effective feedback on papers written by EAL nursing students.
